Educational Foundations Timeline

  • Founding of Boston public school

This was important because it was the first public school in America. This paved the way for more public schools to open, educating as much people as possible. Public schools around the country began to compile, which spread the word that education is obtainable. This helped lower-income families to provide their children with education, and no longer only to the upper-class (Edmund, 2012).
  • Founding of Harvard, First college in America

This is important to me because I found college to be the most influential period of my life. It was at this time that I was officially on my own and was encountering many responsibilities and growths. I matured a great deal and began to seriously think about my future and what I wanted to do with my life. I think that everyone, if possible, should be able to experience college. College is a time to exapnd one's knowledge and figure out exactly what they are good at.
  • The Massachusetts' Bay School Law

This date was significant in my life because both my family and I are extremely religous. This event marked the inclusion of the principles of religion in education. Although I did not attend a private or catholic school, I did attend PSR. PSR was a time where I began to understand what exctly I believe in. It was a time where I was able to branch off from my family's beliefs and figure things out on my own (Edmund, 2012).
  • The First Publicly Supported Library

Throughout my education I have found libraries to be extremly useful. I have studied in libraried constantly and have their abundant resources to be very helpful in my studies and hopefully in my future classroom. I believe that libraries should be accessible obainable to everyone. Libraries are a place for both research and reading, which everyone should be able to be able to do.
  • Girls began to be allowed in schools

This was obviously important to me because my whole life, I have been attending public schools. I have interacted with both boys and girls throughout my entire education. I believe that it is best if both genders learn together because I believe it is an entirely different type of learning that all students need to get used to. In the real world, all different types of people interact and work together, therefore in school it should be the same way.
  • The First Public High School

The first public high school opens in Boston. This is significant because I have gone through the public education system my entire life and believe that it can be just as influential and impacting as pricate and independent education. My specific high school offered many honors and AP courses that I took advantage of and used to prepare myself for college. I believe that public education, when incorporated correctly can be extremely influential.
  • Women bcame dominant in teaching

It was at this time, that it was documented that women were overall more dominant that men in the field of teaching. This shows the beginning of the women falling into the familiar gender roles that we are still dealing with today. This applies to me because as a women myself, I am dealing with also falling under these gender roles.
  • Plessy vs. Ferguson

This date marks the federal decison to include segregation in America's school system. If this decision was never overturn, I would never have met one of the most influential people in my life. My best friend throughout high school was African American. She dealt with this very maturely, and was one of the most intelligent students in our class. She helped me learn various topics that I had trouble with and I learned better with her because I was much more comfortable with her.
  • Educational Testing Service is formed

ETS being forming had a huge impact on our country today. This was the beginning of college entrance exams. Everyone had to take these exams, which included pricate, independent, and public schools. Therefore these exams were a balanced standard of one's acquried knowledge through the years and everyone took the exact same test, which made it fair.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

This was a significant date in my life, because it was the final decision to include both white and black students in the public school system. Growing up, my closest childhood friend was African American, and she impacted my maturation in many ways. I find this event to be historiacally important in many ways. Our country matured greatly with this case. It was a step closer to our country attempting to treat everyone as equals, and I hope that one day this ultimately occur.
  • The Higher Education Act

This act greatly affected my life because I have been taking out student loans ever since I entered college. My parents did help me, but for the most part I was on my own which forced me to be much more responsible and greatful with money. I also find this act to be extremely fair in our country today because it helps people make their own opportunities to attend college and receive a higher education, which will ultimately improve our country.
  • The Elementary and Secondary Education Act

The ESEA provided federal funds to help low-income students, which then reslted in the beginning of certain educational programs such as bilingual education. This was important because it was the beginning of equal opportunities. Athough the upper class indeed still has more opportunities and chances, this act was a step closer to being hopefully equal in the future.
  • Title IX

Title IX significantly affected my life because it allowed women to participate in sports. I have been playing sports my whole life and without this passing, my life would be completelt different. My family is a very sports-oriented family and every member has played a sport since they were little. I believe that sports enhance a student's education and in many cases gives them encentive to strive to get good grades in order to be able to play.
  • Equal Educational Opportunities Act passed

This act prohibits discrimination and requires that students provide equal opportunities for all students. This impacted me because I truly believe that all children, no matter what SES background they come from, should have equal opportunities. I believe that every child can succeed if given the correct instruction and guidance. If we as educators do not give them this, we are ultimtely failing them.
  • Education for all Handicapped Children Act

This event is particularly important to me because my mother, who is extremely close to me, works with handicapped children in her career. Also, as a future elementary school teacher, I will also have to learn how to deal and reach out to special need children because they will be included in my classroom. They will need more guidance and special instruction.
  • One of the first charter schools was created

This event impacts my viewpoints and experiences because I personally favor the public school system. I favor it however, because I have had many pleasant and successful experiences within it, but I do realize that in some areas that is not the case. In these low-income areas, parents and students now have another chose, and that is charter schooling. I find this to a postive point in a nation's history because it now gives these unfortunate communities more options.
  • Improving America's Schools Act

IASA was signed by President Bill Clinton which increases funding for bilingual and immigrant education, provisions for public charter schools, drop-out prevention, and educational technology. This ultimately was aimed to improve our children's education which would therefore positively affect society. I find this act to be useful and a step closer to positive improvements.
  • My mom became a teacher's aid

When my mom became a teacher's aid, my viewpoints towards education changed. First, I was introduced the another public school system, different than my own school. This was interesting to me because I was able to visit her and compare her school from mine. This also opened my mind towards teaching and pushed me to begin to think of it as my own possible career.
  • Met my 5th grade teacher

When I was in elementary school, I met many unique teachers. Along the way, I got close with each of them in a different way but my absolutely favorite was my fifth grade teeacher Mr. Walker. Mr. Walker made learning very fun and engaged the whole class to work together to help each other grow and mature. Even though Mr. Walker and I were very close, he did not favor me in anyway and punished me just like all my other peers. This made me respect him even more looking back on it.
  • NCLB Plan was put into place

No Child Left Behind affects me significantly. I have seen first-hand how these tests affect children and I have begun to disagree with them overtime. As a future educator I know I will have to deal and work with these tests also. I hope to find a way to make learning exceptionally fun for my students, I hope to help them relax when taking these tests and encourage them to be the best that they can be, whether that is while test taking, or else where.
  • Decision to continue on into public high school

During the summer going into high school, my parents gave me the option of going to Walsh and continuing on to Strongsville High School. At the time I remember choosing Strongsville because of all of my friends but looking back on it now I am glad I made this decision. I made the most of my education in the public system, and took honors classes throughout my four years there.
  • One of my least favorite teachers

During my sophmore year at Strongsville, I had one of my least favorite teachers. I disagreed with mostly everything she did and we did not get along at all. She was very stern in her instructions and I got in trouble a lot in the class. I remember thinking to myself how I would teach this clas differently and how much "better" I would teach it. This was one of my expereiences that impacted my decision to become a teacher.
  • Decision to attend OSU

Throughout my college application process there many factors that went into account. One of those was to find a college that had a strong engineering program. When I changed my major to education however, I was faced with hoping that OSU was also a strong education school, which I soon find out it was.
  • Decision to Become a Teacher

When I first began college, I decided to become an engineering major. As I continued through my education though I decided to change my major to education. This was influenced by many factors inclduing my peers, family, and previous courses. I dcided to teach because I love chldren. I also love the look on their faces when they finally understand something that is being taught to them. Children are our country's future, and I find it to be an honor to work with them.
  • My sister's decision to become a school therapist

This event oped my viewpoints towards school therapy. Previously, I always viewed counseling and therapying and sort of annoying and unnecessary. I think this was mainly because I never particularly needed it and therefore just judged it from the outside. When my sister decided to pursue this as her career, she opened my eyes to the many students that need and rely on her. This also helped me understand working and helping children with their problems which I will now bring to my own class.
  • Began Student Teaching in Whitehall, OH

Two years ago, I was the given the opportunity to student teach/observe. I was assigned the city of Whitehall, which is a low-income community right outside of Columbus. I was able to observe my teacher in my fourth grade classroom, and the how each student interacted with his/her environment. After awhile I was able to run some lessons also. I watched as these children excelled in the unfortunate circumstances that they were given and it made me realize that it indeed is possible.
  • Began work at the OSU Childcare Center

When I first began to work at the Childcare Center I was very confused. It was the first time that I was working with such young children and I didn't quite know how to deal with it. However, over the passing months I became very used to certain classrooms, teachers, and children. Overtime I eventually began to love it and began to incorporate my teaching abilities into my work.
  • Tutoring

Two years ago, I began tutoring a few students in reading. This was one of my first experiences working one on one with a child, and it really opened my eyes to all of the possibilities that I as an educator can create. I really had fun during this time, and loved both observing their differences and also accepting and encouraging them.
  • Decision between Hawken and Sunview Elementary

A few months ago I was faced with the very difficult decision between student teaching at Hawken or South-Euclid Lyndhurst. When I first visited Hawken I loved it there. I loved the surroundings and how nice everything was. When I visited South-Euclid, I felt excited to teach and reach out to thiese children. I was excited to work in a diverse classroom and deal with differentiating my instrcution to meet each of their unique needs.
  • Graduating from OSU

Throughout college, I was one of those students who always loved being around my friends and having a great time. I did always make sure I got my work done and studied, but I always wanted to cherish my independence from home. While doing this, I was never fully sure about teaching. I always did indeed know this was what I wanted to do with career, I just wasn't sure how to go about beginning. Once, I graduated though, things changed and I chose my path. That path was achieving my masters.
