    White Lotus Rebellion

    Initated a series fo internal conflicts in China. Was ingited by social instabilities. Members of the White Lotus wanted to return to the Previous Ming Dynasty ways.

    Opium War

    Opium was being traded in China even against royal decree, the opium caused all sorts of health problems. China was now importing more than it was exporting. Opium was then illegal in China.
  • Treaty of Nanking (Nanjing)

    China had a great loss with this treaty, which ended the Opium War. Stated unequal things like Hong Kond should be gived to Britian on a 99 year lease, and that China should pay Britian 21 million for the Opium destroyed in the first Opium war. China had to open more of their trade ports, which led to more western products, and the decline of the Chinese economy.

    Taiping Rebellion

    Radical political and religious upheavel that ravaged 17 provinces in China and took many people. Hung Xiuquan believed himself to be the son of God. This later became the modernization of China, many new things took place one example was that there were finally gender rights in China.

    Arrow War

    Also known as the second Opium War, Brittish attacked Chinese ports after Britain gained the "most favored nation" status. This war actually had nothing to do with Opium. Created benefits for foreign merchants and a steady source of revenue for the Chinese government.

    Decentralization and end of the Qing Empire

    weakened by the Opium and Arrow Wars. No hope of getting out of debt. Disintergrated into a number of large power zones.

    Meiji Restoration

    Happened to protect Japan from western imperialism. Now had mony things that countries in the west had also. Much like other industrialized countrie came to be industrialized.
  • Sphere of Influence

    Geographical location located in East Asia. It was believed that if anyone else held this sphere, Japan would be at risk. Japan fought to protect this sphere at the advice of Yamagata Aritomo. Japan then began a program of military industrialization.

    Sino-Japanese War

    Marked the Emergence of Japan as a major world power. War between China and Japan over who got Korea. Both countries wanted Korea's natural resources.
  • Boxer Uprising

    Chinese secret society known as the "Righteous Fists" rose up and starting attacking foreigners. Military forces put down the rising and occupied Beijing. This was alos an uprising of pesants.
