    DISSERTATION PREPERATION / PROGRESS MAP

A progress map of my Dissertation Preparation so far.
  • First Class / Dis Prep

Today in class we covered the brief overall. It was interesting to discuss the interests of the members of my group. We began to talk about areas in which we might like to pursue a line of inquiry.
  • Second Class / Dis Prep

Unable to attend to a previous film shoot engagement.
  • Third Class / Dis Prep

Unable to attend to a previous short film shoot engagement.
  • Preliminary Research / Idea One

Took the time to do a small amount of research through some of the most recent Virtual Reality articles as well as some past examples; bringing myself back up to speed on the current state of the technology and its applications.
  • Started Formative Presentation

Began my Formative Presentation a little later than I would have liked due to other film commitments. Happy with where my idea is going, need to lock down more primary research points though.
  • Fourth Class / Dis Prep

Unable to attend to an unavoidable edit session.
  • Finishing Formative Presentation

Collected a few final pieces of secondary research before my formative deadline. Reworded my leading question to fit better within my research strategy.
  • Fifth Class / Dis Prep

Formative deadline. Arrived 30 minutes late. I presented my short presentation of my ideas to my group. Had an interesting conversation with Sally about how I was taking a different approach than other people who had done VR in the past. Sadly, we came to the conclusion that it would be too much of an investigation into neural studies. It did start an interesting discussion amongst the group though!
  • Preliminary Research / Idea Two

After my discussion with Sally during my formative presentation, I have decided to change my idea to something that will better suit the brief; considering the time schedule and access to resources that I have available. I have changed my angle to go for more practical dissertation. This will give me a chance to explore and develop both my hands-on skills and my contextual understanding of moving image art.
  • Sixth Class / Dis Prep

Arrived late due to a project deadline the following day. Discussed my new idea with Sally Waterman and other members of my group. Was able to get some good feedback on where to look for primary research; several artists/exhibitions between June - November 2017.
  • Signed Up To LuxOnline

Luxonline is a database for art, film, exhibitions and screenings. As well as acting as an agency for artists to distribute their work and promote exhibitions.
  • Further Research / Idea Two

Coming closer to the summative deadline, I have been working on developing my dissertation preparation pack. This has consisted of me contacting to my tutors back in New Zealand to ask if they would be willing to conduct interviews around the topic of gallery exhibitions and the pros + cons of doing so.
  • Seventh Class / Dis Prep

Unable to attend to a film editing meeting. Very unfortunate as I would like to have heard from the speaker Jeremy Barr.
  • Extended R & D / Idea Two

Spend the better part of 2 hours gathering secondary research sources. Mostly from websites, journals and chapters from printed studies. These will provide the a good base of initial research in order with which I can develop my argument from and serve as an introduction in my final dissertation.
  • Final Class / Dis Prep

    Talked through my proposal,
  • Moving Image Multiple Screens / Seminar / University of Westminster

    Seminar / 3pm - 6pm
How have artists engaging with the moving image navigated this ambivalence of reproducibility, both historically and in the contemporary moment? What might the history of the moving image in art look like if retold through the lens of circulation?
  • Isaac Julien: “I dream a world” Gallery Exhibition

Isaac Julien’s seminal work 'Looking for Langston' (1989/2017) is the focus of this exhibition of newly-conceived, large-scale and silver gelatin photographic works and archival material. While this exhibition is not connected to multi-channel video, it does give me an insight into an artist who works with multi-channel gallery installations and will serve as a good point of reference for visiting future exhibitions.
  • Visit to the Design Museum

A recreational trip to the Design Museum to explore innovative ideas and possible resolutions for my research inquiry.
  • Into the Unknown / A Journey through Science Fiction / Exhibition

The genre-defining exhibition of art, design, film and literature.
A perfect opportunity to expand my ideas within the Genre of sci-fi.
  • Early Experimentation Brainstorming

Begin planning ideas for my experimentation in October. Thinking about the types of content that would suit the format.
  • Visit To WellcomeCollection Library

Planning to visit the WellcomeCollection Library to gather more credit secondary sources to support my contextual exploration of my lead question.
  • Early Experimentation

Begin basic experimentation with multi-channel video. Cut together short conceptual videos to play with the format and the process of creating audiovisual pieces in this way.
  • John Akomfrah: Dark Sun Symphonies

John Akomfrah will be exhibiting his new work "Dark Sun Symphonies" (6 October 2017 - 7 January 2018) at the Curve Gallery Exhibition space in the Barbican Centre in London. This will be a good opportunity to experience his work in a gallery space first hand as primary source of research.
  • Close-up Film Center Visit

This will be an extremely valuable source of resources in the form of books and films on cinema, documentary, art and independent films.
