USB Flash Drives 2.0 Standard
The flash drive was orignally invented in 1996, with the original 1.0 standard. Trek Technology released the 'Thumbdrive' in the year 2000. This was widely adopted as the standard in about 1998, and worked at the original 1MB/second. In the year 2000, the 2.0 standard was announced, but wasn't officailay released until 2003. This was 30 times faster working at the speed of 30MB/second. Flash drives were a huge computing devolpment, as before it was difficult to move data from place to place. -
The Smartphone
SmartphonesOriginating in 1993 with the IBM Simon, the term smartphone wasn't even used until 1997 with the Phone GS88. Regardless of this, the major computing development was the sudden widespread use of the smartphone, and its revolutionary advancements. In 2001, Kyocera 6035 was the first 'smartphone' to be sold internationally. In 2002, PalmOS Treo180, was the first phone to have a keyboard! Now you have the iPhone and more, this shows the advancements over the years in smartphones. -
Wi Fi
Wireless LAN Technology is the process of being able to link up multiple devices to a central device. In 1999 The brand Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance began promoting the use of Wi FI. It wasn't until 2002, when the brand changed their name to the Wi Fi Alliance, that Wi Fi was becoming commercially avaliable and used. You can buy products these days which can wirelessly acccess the internet, or link to other devices. This was previously impossible and has proven to be very useful in computing. -
Videotelephony
Videotelephony is not very common but is used. It provides people a way outside of videoconferencing, to communicate with other people from their phone. This is used on smartphones, in particular the iPhone with its Facetime function. This has been a major development, as it has only happened recently, and gives people the oppurtunity to talk face-to-face digitally. There have been many developments over time associated with videophones, but it has been within the last few years in which it has become popular. -
iTunes 4.1
iTunes was previously only avaliable on Macs, Apple's own brand of computers. Though, the release of 4.1, saw the compatibility with Windows 2000 and Windows XP, thus, making iTunes commmerically avaliable. Being able to organise music for your iPod, iPhone and other media players was a revolution. iTunes made evrything so much easier in this field, which is why it was immensely popular. iTunes changed the way music sharing/downloading happened, and was and is a must have on any computer. -
Embedded Systems In Modern Devices
Embedded Systems have become so advanced over their long time period.It has been recently, that they have been applied to most devices. Computers are so advanced these day, they can be built really small, and for certain purposes. You can have exercise bikes that record your speed and time on the bike, fridges that adjust their temperature based on the contents and the outside temperature and more. Without these mini computers, things would be so much harder, as things wouldn't be as automatic as they are, meaning this development has ben very useful. -
Google Earth
Google Earth proves how computers have developed over time. Using satellites and aerial imagery, Google Earth shows the world as an interactive 3D Globe. You can see famous landmarks, go to the Moon, or look in your backyard. Other then showing the developments in different types of computers, Google Earth also shows how programs on computers, and computers in general, are used as inofrmational resources. Google Earth allows anybody to find out more about a particular landmark or area by a simple click! -
Windows Vista
This version of Windows, was the first to be released on multiple devices. Before this, only laptp and computers were able to use Wndows. This development in computng, allowed you to use it on even tablets, and all other forms of devices. Windows became an operating system which had numerous capabilities. and had multiple purposes. It came with a new and improved GUI, as well as many imporvements on its programs. Windows Vista became very popular due to its various uses and device compatablility. -
Kindles
KIindles were not expected to do much, but have had a major impact. In 2007, the year of the release of the Kindle, having a device which can have access to an immense amount of books and even check e-mails was previously not thought of. It was very popular, becoming the new way to portably carry numerous e-books and access the internet. Before the kindle, e-books were bearly heard of, but thanks to this advancement in computing, e-books are not only popular, butare becoming the new way to read. -
Social Networking On A Global Scale
Social Netowrking has only been around for a small amount of time. Facebook was invented only in 2004, but took 5 years to become Global. Social Networking sites have been around since the 90's, but only 3 sites (Facebook, Twitter and Google+) are the ones to have become so widely used. Computers have developed to improve the communication between people, especially in this area as you can now completely socialise with groups of people, or your entire friends list on facebook. In short, Socil networking has been an important development in the fields of computers. -
Tablet Computing
Tablet ComputingPeople these days define the tablet as an iPad, but most people don't realise that tablets date back to concepts by Alan Kay in 1968. Another thing is that most people don't realise the trial and error involved in creating the tablet. You had the overpriced, over sized GridPad in 1989, The Zoomer PDA in 1992, and a large list of others up until the iPad in 2010. The iPad redefined what a tablet was, and is one of the most advanced computers on the planet with its revolutionary capabilities. -
Working From Home
Working from home is the way of the future. Many people are doing it already, using their computers to complete their work and send it into their boss so that it is done on itme. If you consider the rate in which technology is advancing, soon enough, this will become widespread, as it is an much easier way to do things. If you consider this as a computer development, imagine the changes that will happen in the future.. Computers will develop and change as they always do to accompany this way of work. -
Remote Electronic Access
Foxtel has released an app recently, which allows you to remotely record shows from your iPhone, on your Foxtel iQ at home. In about 4 years time, I believe you will be able to do this, but to more then your Foxtel. Imagine being able to turn your heater on, because it's cold outside, on your way back from work. Or printing off some documents at the printer at work from home. The possibilities are endless, and with this new found technology, computing will develop even further in the future. -
Holographic Imagery
Holographic Imagery will be one of the next computer developments. The rate in which computers are developing, will allow us to see realistic, 3D, human sized images from a projector of some sort. With the source being over thousands of kilometres away. This will prove to be useful, as the techology can be used for multiple purposes and further developed. It can also be used for numerous reasons depending on the way it is developed, the ways this could be used are countless. -
Auto Command
These days you have cars which can park themselves. In about 8 years time, imagine being able to set in a few details, the route you would like to take and your car driving for you. Soon enough this will be the cause, as computer technology in cars will be more advanced. It won't only be cars either, this because computers are built into many things, and as time goes by, those computers will develop and provide even more capabilities to the user. Making them extremely useful for us in the future.
