  • European trade with Africa becomes well established

    The Europeans who now need raw materials for their Industrialization turned to Africa for their supplies. The Europians were mostly settled on the coast of Africa, but needed more land for trade and taking materials, so they eventually turned to Imperialism.
  • East India Company collapses due to Sepoy Rebellion; British Raj begins

    The British were ruling India for years throught the East India Company and treated the Indians with racism. The people of India did not like this. The fianl straw was when the British greased the cartridges with beef and pork fat that you need to bite to make the gun work. The Hindu Sepoys could not do this because the cow is sacred to them and the Muslims could not do this because they can not eat pig. After this, they rebelled and the war started and it took a year for the British to control.
  • Suez Canal links the Mediterranean and Red Seas

    This was build by Isma'il, who ruled Egypt. He used a lot of the French money. When the canal was completed, he was far into debt. The British were willing to buy them out if they gained control of the canal and the Egyptians accepted the money and then, Egypt was occupied by the British.
  • Berlin Conference convenes to discuss terms for African colonization

    KIng Loepold III of Belgium proposed the Berlin Conference so that no European countries started a war over land in Africa. 14 countries of Europe came together and divided Africa between themselves. Each country that was there got their own piece of land, some more than others. This is significant because the cultures and civilizations of Africa would forever be changed in good and bad ways.
  • Queen Liliuokalani takes the throne of Hawaii

    She came to power in 1893 and proposed an act that would increase her power and control over Hawaii. The American companies did not want this because it would be harder for them to get their sugar, so they befriended the king of Hawaii and overthrew the Queen, soon annexed Hawaii, and it eventually became a state.
  • Ethiopians defeat the invading Italians at the Battle of Adwa

    The Italians tried to trick the Ethiopians in a treaty that was wrongly translated. Menelik II though he was giving up a small part of Ethiopia where in reality, he was giving up all of it as a protectorate of Italy. He did not like this and went to war with the Italians. They won and the Ethiopians managed to stay free throughout their history.
  • Spanish-American War breaks out; Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines taken from Spain

    After the Americans won the war, the acquired those three terretories. Once we gained control of the Phillipines, they said that we were supposed to give them independence once we won the war. They spoke through the Filipino nationalist Emilio Aguinaldo. The Americans agreed to this, but they prepared the Phillipines for independence.
  • Boer War in South Africa

    The Dutch settled in the Cape Region many years before the British gained control of it in the Berlin Conference. The Dutch people who lived there were called Boers. They believed that they deserved the land, and that led to a full on war between the British and the Boers. The British eventually won the war and pushed many Boers north.
  • Most of Africa is under European control

    The Europeans began taking control of Africa for their needs because of Industrialization. They needed raw materials and turned to Africa. The Berlin Conference was organized so that they could evenly distribute Africa, and then a majority of Africa became under European control because of so.
