    Britain Makes a Promise
    Around the time of World War I, Britain allied against the Ottoman Empire, and gained a lot of territory in the Middle East. They gained control over many areas of land, including where Palestine was locaed. In the Balfour Declaration, the British prime minister promised to the Jewsih people that Britain would actively work to officially designate Palestine as a Jewish homeland. Thus, the Jews gained international support and were one step closer to having an official Jewish state.

    United Nations Takes  Action
    Britain decided after almost 30 years of dealing with the conflict between Zionists and Arabs, to hand over responsibility to the United Nations. The United Nations desginated a special committee to this issue, who proposed the idea of dividing the land. The Jewish leaders accepted this, while the Arabs strongly opposed this idea. the united Nations decided to give about 56% of Palestine to the Jewsih and about 44% of Palestine to the Arabs.

    The declaration of Israel as an official Jewish state was made the day after the last British troops were removed from Palestine. The Jewish and Arabs had been fighting since the partition of !947. Israel became the first official Jewish state in over 2000 years.

    Six Day War

    There was a six day war in June of 1967when Irael launched an air attack on the surronding countries. They gained the old city of Jerusalem and the Syrian area of the Golan Heights. What is surprising about this victory for Israel is that they had half of the forces than the countries they were fighting. Most of the war was done by air, which gave them the advantage.

    The Yom Kippur War took place on the Jewsih Holy Day of Yom Kippur. Egypt and Syria attacked Israel. Israel fought back and after 18 days they had a ceasefire. All three countries felt like they had won. The war brought about the Camp David Accords which were plans for peace with Egypt, America, and Israel.

    Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated in 1995. Minister Rabin was shot three times after he left the pace rally in Tel Aviv. The shooter, Yigil Amir, was overpowered and arrested. He had opposed the signing of the Oslo Accords. These were agreements between the governments of Israel and Palestine, which were designed to create peace between the countries.

    President Yasser Arafat dies at 75. He had been president of both the Palestine National Authority and the Palestine Liberation Organizations. The PNA was taken over by President Abbas and the PLC was taken over by Rawhi Fattouh. This brought hope that there would be peace between Palestine and Israel.

    In June 2007, a group that was formed out of the Muslim Brotherhood staged a coup. The coup was to remove the PLO in Gaza and drive them out of office. The other party, Fatah, who is headed by former President Abbas, is still in Palestine but is not the dominate party.

    In September 2012 there was a Palestinian bid that requested a membership of the United Nations. Palestinians thought that this was a vital step in becoming a valid country. However, Israelis saw this as an attempt to cut them off from the rest of this world. This caused tensions to rise between Israel and Palestine.
