  • The first rebellion

    The rebellion lasted from 1857-1858. The reason for the rebellion was the treatment of soldiers who defied orders.
  • Government of India Act of 1858

    The act outlawed the rule of East Indian Company and gave power to the British government. The reason the Act was passed is because the East Indian Company was blamed for the rebellion of 1857.
  • Gandhi

    Gandhi
    He is one of the most Important people for the events of the Indian decolonization. His works also influence people to this day.
  • The return of Gandhi to India

    This is when Gandhi returned to India from his time in South Africa. He was there because of the duties he did during the Second Boers war for the British.
  • Jallianwala Bagh massacre

    An event in which Brigadier-General Reginald E.H. Dyer ordered his troops to fire into a crowd. This killed many people including kids. This caused much resentment towards the British. It also influenced non-compliance movement.

    Brigadier-General Reginald E.H. Dyer
    He was responsible for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. This makes him responsible for one of the biggest events in India's Independence movement.
  • Gandhi is elected president

    Gandhi Was elected president of the Indian Home Rule league. In less than a year this would become the Indian National Congress. When he was elected he realized freedom was not near, so he came up with his idea of non-compliance.
  • Non-compliance

    Non-compliance
    In a non-compliance movement, the people go against the authority, usually the government. This was one of the biggest things Gandhi is known for.
  • First non-compliance movement

    Gandhi announced that he would begain his first non-compliance movement. This also came with a strict code of non-violance
  • Riots in Chauri Chaur

    These riots were against the police of that area. In total twenty-one, police were killed. This caused Gandhi to have to end his non-compliance demonstration early because of the aftermath.
  • Vote for freedom

    On December 19, 1929, the Congress held a vote on if India should have Independence. This was held in Lahore. This result was a vote for independence.
  • Gandhi-Irwin Pact

    Gandhi-Irwin Pact
    This pact was set in place to end civil disobedience in India. This was successful and ended non-compliance on a very large scale.
  • End of World War Two

    This marks the end of WWII. This was important for Indian Independence because the cost of the war weakened Britain's ability to keep its empire.
  • Indian flag

    Indian flag
    The flag was submitted and excepted by the Indian Congress. The adoption of a flag is a major step towards independence. It also happened very near when independence was gained.
  • Independence

    When India gained its independence on August 15, 1947. The British withdrew from the entire sub-continent. This formed both India and Pakistan.
