Chris McCandless Journey Into the Wild

  • Graduates Emory University

After Graduating Emory University with a 3.72 GPA, I told my family "I think Im going to dissapear for a while" and dissapear i did. I needed to cleanse myself of society. As I prepared to leave, half of my graduation money was donated to a charity organization to help stop world hunger. Where i was going, there was no need for money.
  • Detrital Wash, Arizona

As I drove west in my datsun, that my parents notoriously hate, a flash flood hit Arizona hard. The water got into my engine, causing to go out. I left a note saying,"This piece of sh*t has been abandoned. Whoever can get it out of here can have it." Along with the car, alot of unneeded belongings were left behind, because I couldnt carry it all.
  • Northern California

Leaving my old life, I wanted to stat a new. In a dirty restroom I saw on the mirror "Alex Supertramp" and thats who I became. Walking, and catching rides I slowly made it to California. To keep from losing sanity, I kept track of all my endeavors in a journal, writing can be very theraputic. After abandoning everything, I needed money to eat. I did not believe in a conventional job, and did not have any documentation so I took up working for a man named Crazy Ernie, couldnt trust him so I left.
  • Carthage, South Dakota

I ran into a woman named Jan, she seemed cool. Reminded me of my mother, who I missed dearly, but unlike her, she didnt revolve around monetary needs. Jan also had a son whose wherabouts were unkown, maybe I should write back home. She took me to South Dakota.
  • Mexico

After my boss gets arrested, I decided Mexico sounds cool. I get accross the border un noticed in a kayak. We often think of the border as somethign that should be taken seriously, but Mexico is cool. Never let rules hold you back from living.
  • Tex-Mex border

I got arrested by police trying to sneak back into the US. They kept me in for a day, free me. After letting me back in, they took my gun. I heard most peolple get sent back to Mexico, so I wonder why they let me through.
  • Bullhead City, Arizona

On my trip of spontaneity, I needed a break from the fast life. I took up a job at McDonalds, and lived in a trailor. I didnt want to talk to my family, so I send a postcard to Jan, I hope she is well.
  • Salton City, California

Back to being a hobo, I met a guy on my way for supplies. His name was Franz, and looked around 80, and itantly I liked him. He taught me how to use my hands to craft items, no need to buy from the store when you can do it yourself.
  • Carthage, South Dakota

My homie Wayne free, so I went back to do some work. I stayed about a month to help him get back on track, then its straight to Alaska.
  • Stampede Trail

Shoutout to Jim Gallien, he took me to the Stampede Trail, my final destination. Made it this far without having to pay for an Uber. I found a bus out here, so I guess this is my new home for a while.
  • Teklanika River

So its good game out here, for about 6 weeks. Tried to go back but now water too deep. Man, i wish Franz taught me how to preserve meat, its full of maggots.
  • Last Day

After all the meet rotted, and the river overflowing, Im very weak. My stomach is eating itself, and its hard to walk far. "I have had a happy life and thank the Lord. Goodbye and may God bless all!" was left on the door. We souldnt conform to society, but we should never live free on our own, civilization is neccesary for survival.
