  • Opium War

    China sinks a ship that is carrying opium, war breaks out. China's isolation led to it not undergoing the industrial revolution. China loses the war and is forced to open trade and goes throgh a bitter century of humiliation.
  • The Long March

    The Communist Party led by Mao Zedong fled from the Nationalist party. They walked for almost 10 years fleeing frm the Nationalists. During this time they won support form the peasants by paying for the supplies they took and being kind to civilians.
  • The Great Leap Forward

    Mao Zedong launches the Great Leap Forward to modernize China. People do not work as hard because they are guaranteed food. People resisit the commune system and burn crops. The Great Leap Forward ended in idsater and Mao was forced to abandon it in the early 1960's.
  • The Four Modernizations

    Deng Xiao-Ping emerges a China's new leader. He wanted to expand industry, develop science and technology, increase military power, and modernize agriculture. Deng succeded because he offered additional rewards for people who produced additional crops so people worked harder. This plan mainly worked because he did not use a communist method and used a capitalist method.
  • Tiananmen Square Massacre

    Students protested peacefully asking for more rights. PLA fired on the protestors. This showed how China's government does not care about its people.
