  • Nationalism

    Nationalism
    Nationalism lead to the overthrow of the Qing Dynasty in 1912, which ruled China since the 1600s. The new government established was the Republic of China.
  • Chinese Communist Party

    Chinese Communist Party
    A group of men and their leader Mao Zedong were part of a group called the Chinese Communist Party. Their goal was to spread communism throughout the country of China.
  • Mao Zedong

    Mao Zedong
    Mao Zedong was part of a group of Chinese men that formed the first Chinese Communist Party. After the attack on the Communists, Mao lead his followers into the mountains to escape being defeated by the Nationalist government. This Journey can be called the Long March. in October 1949, Mao created the People's Republic of China. mao wanted China to become a nation of farmers and workers. Mao died in 1976 realizing all he did was a mistake.
  • Nationalist Party

    Nationalist Party
    They had a truce with the Communists until they turned against them. A group lead by Jiang Jieshi, called the Nationalist Republic of China, was formed to spread Nationalism throughout China.
  • Chiang Chi Shek (Jiang Jieshi)

    Chiang Chi Shek (Jiang Jieshi)
    Jiang jieshi turned on the Communists and announced the Nationalist Republic of China. A Civil War was created. Jiang Jieshi's wish came true when the Cultural Revolution defeated the Red Guards following Mao Zedong's death.
  • Nationalist Republic of China

    The Natiionalist Republic of China was ruled by Jiang Jieshi and the Kuomintang government, after they turned against Mao Zedong and the Communists. They ended up ruling after Mao's death in 1976 along with the defeat of the Red Guards.
  • Manchuria

    Manchuria
    Japan took control of the small province on China known as Manchuria.
  • The Long March

    The Long March
    Mao lead a group of about 600,000 people into the mountains to escape the Nationalists. They walked nearly 6,000 miles in the Journey known as the Long March.
  • The Red Army

    The Red Army
    When Mao Zedong's communists, The Red Army, swept the national government from power, Civil War broke out from 1946 to 1949. The Red Army defeated the Nationalists in October 1949, creating the People's Republic of China.
  • Republic of China

    Republic of China
    After civil war broke out between Mao and Jiang's groups, Mao took the victory and made the People's Republic of China.
  • The Great Leap Forward

    The Great Leap Forward was created when Mao Zedong wanted all farms to be large collectives. Large collectives are controlled by the government. However, this created problems for the farmers not getting their own land. In the 1950s, crop failures made matters worse, and the Great Leap Forwrd was later abandoned in 1960.
  • Collectives

    Collectives
    Mao wanted all farms to be collectives, where they are under government control. This lasted for a couple of years until crop failures and famine caused Chinese farms to return back to their original state.
  • The Cultural Revolution

    This program was created after the failure of the Great Leap Forward. he encouraged people to make war on anything that respects peoples differences. This revolution died in 1976.
  • Red Guards

    Mao Zedong announced the cultural revolution in 1966. He encouraged students to leave school and rebel against anything that encouraged class differences. The students were organized into an army calleed the Red Guards.
