    Zheng He

    Zheng He
    Zheng He was an explorer during the Ming Dynasty. He made voyages to Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. He was castarated at a young age but rose in the hierachy system of the Ming. He became close to the emperor, Zhu Di.

    Forbidden City

    The construction of the Forbidden city begins. The Forbidden city is a place of high standards. People such as thge emperor and high officials will live there.

    Grand Canal

    Zhu Di wanted to renovate the Grand canal in order to speed up trade. Since the canal is the largest river known, Zhu Di wanted to protect it for better use. The grand canal was necessary to merchants becaue they needed to get products to the Yellow river.

    Beijing

    Beijing
    Beijing is named as the new capital after the consturction of the Forbidden city is completed. This made Nanjing as the second capital of China. The reason for this was because the Forbidden was in Beijing which was a place were emperors and high officials lived.

    In this year, the Portugese begin making contact with China. This will then lead tp Portugal taking advatage of China's goods and low prices. The Potugese will benefit more from the material than the Chinese themselves.

    Permanent Portugal visit
    Portugese set up a settlement in Macau. This means that Portugal is benefiting directly from Asian trade as well as taking advantage. This could also mean that Portugal takes more from Asia and gives little back.

    Goverment allows people to pay with silver currency due to infaltion. The value of the paper money went down. This was also due to counterfeit exhanges.
  • Manchu

    The Manchu begin to conquer most of China. The Ming dynasty crashed down because of rebellions. The Manchus were supposed to stop the rebellion but instead took advantage of it.

    The Ming invited the Manchu to help stop a Ming rebellion. The Manchus agreed and once inside the Manchus took control of the Ming empire. The Manchus then renamed themselves the Qing
  • Qing

    Qing
    Qing Dynasty is established in China. The Qing are the Manchu warriors who were invited into China to stop the Ming rebellion. Once inside, however, the Manchus began attacking the Ming.
  • British East India Company

    The British set up their trading port in China. This is because of how many goods China has to offer. This is also the begnning of how slowly Britain took over China's trading system.
  • Banning Christianity

    The Qing were trying to make China a more centralized government, religion wise. The Qing emperor decided that Christianity disrupted old Chinese strucutre, so he banned Christianity. Missionaries and merchants were not allowed to preach Christianity.
  • Opium

    Opium
    British introduced Opium into China. Opium soon became popular but proved to be destructive. In 1838, the emperor decided to ban Opium in China.
  • Opium Wars

    AIn 1839, a general ordered his men to search warehouses, arrest merchants, and destroy Opium. The Chinese government didn't want anything to do with the Opium. Britian ensured a war which China lost to.
  • Unequal Treaties

    Unequal Treaties
    The Unequal Treaties gave Britian the opportunity to expand in China for trade. Britian changed a lot of Chinese conservative society. Britian allowed Christian missionaries to enter as well as increasing the number of Opium addicts.
  • Christian Missionaries

    After the Chinese lost to the British in the Opium war, the Chinese were forced to live under strict British rule. Christian missionaries had to be allowed in China. This occured even though once the Qing settled into rule, they banned Christianity.
  • Taiping Rebellion

    Taiping Rebellion
    The Taiping rebellion was led by Hong Xiuquan who claimed to be related to Jesus. This rebellion was made with the purpose of kicking the Manchu's out of China. The rebellion consisted of about 30 million people.
  • Second Opium War

    The second Opium war lasted for four years and China still lost, After their secind win, The British expanded trade even more. This weskened China from the inside.
  • Boxer Rebellion

    Boxer's were essentially Anti-Manchu, Anti-Christian, Anti-European, and the society of Righteous and Harmonious fists. The main goal of the Boxers was to take the Europeans and Japanese out of China. Boxers were not successful but instead ended up causing the Boxer Protocol.
  • Boxer Protocol

    China needed help from outside forces once the Boxer rebellion began. There was an agreememnt made between countries that China was indebted to them. China was not allowed to have these uprisings again.
