  • The Tiananmen Incident

    The Tiananmen Incident
    This was initiated by the death of Zhou Enlai earlier in 1976, During this event, people protested against central authorities. Protests took place in the Square. This counterrevolutionary event forced Vice Premier Deng Xiaoping out of office and to be put under house arrest.
  • Beijing Spring

    During this event, the public were given the freedom to openly criticize the corrupt government of the past. This criticism was towards the Cultural Revolution and the behavior of the government.
  • Chinese Economic Reform

    Chinese Economic Reform
    This was started by reformists in the Communist Party of China and ed by Deng Xiaoping . While this reform was long term, the Chinese made a great deal of changes during the early stages of the reform, such as opeing up the country to foreign investment adn permission for entrepreneurs to start businesses. This reform accounts for 70% of China's GDP ny 2005 and the economy's increase by 9.5% per year from 1978-2010.
  • One-Child Policy

    This was made as a means of population control in 1979. This policy restricts married couples to have no more than one child. It was made to counter envrionmental, social, and economic problems in China. This policy, however, caused an increase in forced abortions and female infanticide, and has been suggested to possibly cause China's gender imbalance.
  • Sino-British Joint Declaration

    This was signed by Prime Ministers Margaret Thatcher of the UK and Zhao Ziyang of the PRC. During this agreement, the Chinese Government stated that it would continue to exercise its sovereignty over Hong Kong and the UK Government agreed to hand over Hong Kong to the Chinese Government in July 1st, 1997.
  • Tiananmen Square protests of 1989

    Tiananmen Square protests of 1989
    These were popular protests which China's army crushed on June 4th, 1989. Chinese authorities ordered the protestors out of the Square and the soldiers killed the protestors before they even got to the square. After this event, the Chinese government strengthened its police and internal security forces and focused more on collective leadership and political consensuses. As a result, economic and political reforms were delayed.
  • 1992 Consensus

    During this consensus, the "One China principle" is established, in which both China and Taiwan recognizes that there is only one China. Also in this agreement, the PRC and the ROC are to be made legitimate representatives when it came to foreign affairs.
