  • The Nationalist forces retreat to Taiwan

    The Nationalist forces retreat to Taiwan, which began the beginning of the Communist rule in China. Mao Zedong rules till 1976. Civil War in China ends. The end of the Civil Wars brings an era of stability to China, and the Communist party, which is still in power until now.
  • China intervenes in the Korean War

    China intervenes in the Korean War on the side of North Korea. This was one of China’s first interventions in International affairs after becoming a Communist state. This gave China its international appearance, one that still maintains today.
  • Hundred Flowers Campaign

    This campaign started within the communist government of China. The movement took away the restriction of the people, which gave them more freedom of thought and speech. This was a step to democracy in the Chinese government and showed that communism was not really working in China. This also means that the people had more freedom.
  • Mao Zedong launches the Great Leap Forward.

    Mao Zedong launches the Great Leap Forward. This is when he modernized China in regards to industry and agriculture. The Great Leap Forward improved China economically and gave the government something that they used to encourage the population.
  • Socialist Education Movement

    The Socialist Education Movement was Mao Zedong’s policy for the Communist Party in order to never forget class struggles. This policy was made in order to tackle the corruption within the Communist Party. By tackling this corruption, the government would be able to follow its Communist policies and focus more on the redistribution of wealth.
  • The Little Red Book was published.

    The Little Red Book was published, which contained of Mao Zedong’s most famous quotes. This book ends up becoming the main text for all Chinese education. The book provided the government and people of China with a text that they could be internationally known for. It also provided the government with a text that became a basis for all future Chinese governmental texts.
  • Mao Zedong maintaining in Power.

    In 1966, Mao stated that he was healthy enough and capable of maintaining as the leader of China. He proved it to the people by swimming in the Changjiang (Yangtze) river. By this, Mao was self-confident that no one would be able to ask him to step down because of old-age.
  • Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution

    • The Cultural Revolution was the government’s attempt at preventing the growth of the middle class. They did this in order to prevent the Soviet ideals, which were popular with the middle class from spreading to the rest of the population. This provided the Chinese government with a way to show their power over their population.
  • • Successful launch of the SJ-1 Satellite.

    China successfully launched the SJ-1 satellite in the orbit with two scientific payloads. This was Chinas second scientific exploration which replaced the telemetry music box with a cosmic ray detector, x-ray detector, magnetometer and other instruments. This shows that China was interested in developing its sciences and developing scientifically.

    President Nixon of the United States visits China in order to improve relations between the two nations. This provided the Chinese government with a path into the western world; it allowed them to become a major force within the global economy.
  • Mao Zedong dies

    Mao Zedong dies. This leads to a restructuring of China’s economy to a more capitalist one. The change to a more capitalist economy helped China improve relations with western nations. This led to an increase in trade, which improved China’s economy. This also led to better living conditions for the people of China.
  • Gang of Four Arrested

    After Mao had died, the persons closest to him known as the “Gang of Four” were arrested and charged with crimes against the people of China. This assured the government that no top leader will be able to follow and carry out Mao’s policies. Also, the people of China didn’t want to be governed by someone like Mao, and so appreciated the arrest.
