Battle of Tours
The Muslims had conquered Spain and wanted to expand their empire. In this battle, Charles Martel confronted the Moors in a wooded area and forced them to fight uphill. After 6 days, the Moors attacked and Martel's forces held which had never happened before as a infantry withstood a mounted attack. The Moors then returned to Spain, defeated. -

Pepin the Short gives the Pope the Papal States
In 751, Pepin the Short is official named the king of the Franks by Pope St. Zachary. Pepin then goes to Italy in 754 to protect the Pope against the Lombards. After defeating the Lombards, Pepin gives the Pope the gift of the Papal states. This is an important event because its results brought about many detriments as well as benefits. -
Crowning of Charlemagne
Charlemagne had started to become very well known by Popes and other empires. He defeated the Lombards, becoming the first to unite all ther Germanic kingdoms. In 800 he traveled to Rome to look into some of the papal corruption going on there and on Christmas Day, 800, he was anointed "Emperor of Rome" by Pope Leo III. -
Education Improvements from Charlemagne
Charlemagne was very big on education and learning and he revolutionized writing of the time. He also introduced spacing, marks, and upper and lowercase letters. All of his changes helped not only his reputation and legacy but also the society of his empire. -
Bloody Verdict of Verdun
After Charlemagne defeated the Saxons, he made them swear oaths of loyalty to him. Then he preceeded to arrest 4500 Saxons who had been worshiping false gods and attacking his troops. He had them all beheaded. This event in history shows how serious Charlemagne became about his religion.
