Causes of the first period of the Chinese civil war

    The peasants had terrible life conditions and the majority were extremely poor and had to pay for excessive taxes. There was an increase in population which lead to unemployment in the country and overall anger from the people.

    The May Fourth Movement
    It began when a group of students and intellectuals led a demonstration in Beijing against the Warlords. Their hostility aroused from the Versailles Settlement and the fact that China had joined the Allies. The movement was dedicated to change and the rebirth of China and influenced by revolts in Russia as well as ideals and ideologies.

    The death ot the emperor and the succession of a two year old boy and his brother led China to face even worst economical, political and social conditions with an emperor who could not do anything to improve the situation.

    The people overthrew the dynasty and placed a Republic. Then most provinces declared themselves independent of Beijing. Dr Sun Yixian was called from exile and he agreed for the militar Yuan Shikai to be the president ot the republic.

    The rule of Yuan Shikai
    Yuan Shikai become military dictator of China from 1912 to 1926. He left unresolved the issues of the 1911's revolution and abolished the regional assemblies which the constitution created in 1912. This led to the separation of China and the emergence of the Guomindang in the south. In 1916 he declares himself emperor hence losses the support of the military power and three months later he dies.

    The Warlord Era

    Warlord came after the death of Yuan Shikai. They were characterized by owning a vast territory of land, ruling it and the people also living in it, charging taxes and ruling independently. This lead China to divide even more and an increase of nationalism as well of overall humiliation people felt.

    The First United Front was made up the GMD and the CCP in an attempt to defeat the Warlords and unify China. They agreed China needed to be free of the foreign imperialist powers. However the leader of the GMD, Jiang Jieshi, later became increasingly anti-communist which lead to a dispute within the two sides

    After the victories over the Northern expedition, the two sides lost the ideology of fighting the warlords which maintained them together. After that, the CCP gained a lot of support from the people and Jiang did not agree with this since he was more sympathetic to landlords and the middle class. As a consequence, Jiang expelled all the communist from the GMD and begin his initiative of persecution and killing all communists in China.This began the civil war in China
