  • 1897 - Zionism

    In this year modern Zionism was officially established by a Jewish journalist named Theodor Herzl. He believed that the only way for Jews to be free from European anti-Semitism and to survive was to create their own nation. He died in 1904 and years before Israel has declared a state, he was still considered the father of modern Zionism.
  • 1915 - McMahon‐Hussein Correspondence

    1915 - McMahon‐Hussein Correspondence
    This event was a series of letters by the British, assuring that in exchange for helping them fight the Ottoman Empire in WW1, the land held by the Turks would be returned to Arab nationals who lived in that land. But to also give their support to the Jews for a homeland in Palestein.
  • 1916 - Sykes-Picot agreement

    When WW1 finished, the land that belonged to the Ottoman Empire was split between the French and British to control. This was the Sykes-Picot agreement.
  • 1917 - Balfour Declaration

    1917 -  Balfour Declaration
    The British seize Palestine from the Ottomans Empire and gives support to the idea of giving Jewish people a national home, this happened through the Balfour Declaration. The statement came in the form of a letter from Britain's then-foreign secretary, Arthur Balfour, addressed to Lionel Walter Rothschild, a figurehead of the British Jewish community.
  • 1940 - Holocaust

    During this time millions of Jews were murdered in concentration camps. After the Holocaust, the need for a Jewish state became more important to the Jews and European government.
  • 1947 - United Nations Partition Plan

    1947 - United Nations Partition Plan
    After the Holocaust in Europe, the United Nations approved resolution 181. This was a partition that would put Palestine into two states, one for the Jewish and the other Arab. As part of the plan, Jerusalem would have been under international control. However, this idea was strongly rejected by the Arabs and fighting between Jews and Arabs began immediately.
  • 1948 - Israel turns Independent

    1948 - Israel turns Independent
    The declaration of the establishment of the State of Israel was declared by the Head of the World Zionism Organization, the Chairman of the Jewish Agency for Palestine and the soon to be Prime Minister of Israel. This happened the effect on the end of the British mandate. This is now an event in Israel with a national indepence day on the 5 Lyar on the Hebrew calendar.
  • 1949 - Jewish Resettlement in Israel

    Zionism led to a great Jewish immigration into Israel, about 35,000 Jews relocated to the area between 1882 and 1903. Another 40,000 made their way to the homeland between 1904 and 1914. In total more than 249,000 Jewish settlers moved to Israel. The Jewish population in Israel increased from 500,000 to 5.6 iby 2010.
  • 1967 - Six day war

    1967 - Six day war
    In June Israel fought a war with Jordan, Syria and Egypt, this happened after Nasser had announced that his intention was to destroy the Jewish state.The six day war left the Gaza Strip, Egypt's Sinai Peninsula , Syria's Golan Heights, and Jordan's West Bank in Israels hands.
  • 1987 - 1991 - First Intifada

    The first intifada was the Palestinians rising against the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. It began in the Jablia refugee camp after an Israel defence force truck had a crashed into a civilian car, killing four Palestinians. The intifada was a series of Palestinian demonstrations, nonviolent actions like boycotts and civilians refusing to work jobs in Israel etc. The Israeli military responded to the protests with attacks with heavy force.
  • 1993 - 2001 - Oslo Declaration

    1993 - 2001 - Oslo Declaration
    In 1993 Prime minister Rabin and PLO leader Yasser Arafat signed the Oslo declaration. The declaration was to give Palestinians their own government and to formally end the first Intifada. In December 1994, both leaders were jointly awarded Nobel Peace Prizes due to the Oslo declaration November 1995, Jewish extremist assassinated Yitzhak Rabin in Tel Aviv (peace rally).
  • 2000 - 2005 - Second Intifada

    In September 2000 the negotiations between Prime minister Ehud Barak and Yasser Arafat didn't end well and the intifada began shortly. Compared to the first intifada, the Palestinians had changed their tactics and suicide bombings happened, rocket attacks and sniper fire - which did not end well as the Israeli defence force came in with a deadlier force. The conflict ended sometime in 2005 but before that 1,000 Israelis and 3,000 palestinians were killed.
  • 2002 - Barrier

    2002 - Barrier
    In June 2002 Israel began building a barrier in and around West Bank. Israel claimed that the point of the barrier was to stop attacks, so security purposes. However, the Palestinians saw it as a way for them to grab land. The route is controversial as it diverts from the ceasefireline into the West Bank.
  • 2005 - Withdrawal of settlements from Gaza Strip

    In September 2005, Israel withdraws all Jewish Settlers and military personnel from the Gaza Strip, however still keeping control over various things such as the airspace, coastal waters and border crossings.
  • 2008 - Invasion of Gaza Strip

    In December 2008, Israel launches month-long scale invasion to prevent any rocket strikes from Hamas and other groups.
