    Queen Elizabeth I established the East India Company. This trading company’s purpose was to increase English trade with India and other Southeast Asian countries.

    Battle of Plessey took place in 1757 when the East India Company and their French allies capture the whole of Bengal, which is India’s richest province. This is the start of colonization and once the company takes control, they heavily taxed Indian citizens, and millions of Indians are dispossessed with their land.

    Sepoy Mutiny
    By 1857, the British controlled most of the Indian subcontinent, many patriotic Indians were distressed by the rapid culture changes imposed by the British. As the increase in economic problems and their feelings of nationalism, the Indians rebelled on May 10, 1857.The rebellion spread from Delhi to northern and central India. This outbreak is called as the Sepoy Mutiny.

    Shortly after the Indian rebellion known as the Sepoy Mutiny in 1857, British officially ruled India in 1858 and this is the official start of colonization. Instead of Bengal, the British colonized the whole of India. British merchants could make a fortune in India and would then return home.

    Birth of Mohandas K. Gandhi who won India’s independence by nonviolent means. Gandi is honored in India as the ‘Father of the Nation.’ From 1920 on, Gandhi led a national movement against the British and in 1942, he issued the call to British to ‘Quit India.’

    On 8th August 1942, Gandhi lectured the famous ‘Quit India Speech.’ In his speech, he called the independence for India. India National Congress demanded freedom to the British and in result, all the national leaders were arrested and the Quit India Movement turned violent.

    By August 15th 1947, Indian was declared an independent country after two hundreds years of colonization by the British. This was due to World War I and II, when the British had become short on finances and powers among Indians.
