Between Shades of Gray

  • Unification

    Unification
The moment I chose to highlight first begins with chapter 6. In this moment, the people on the train are showing unity in their mutual tragedies. Each of the individuals on the train have been taken against their will, and must cooperate to survive. They are all strangers but treat each other as family when they are trying to help the bald man.
  • Perspective

    Perspective
In chapter 27, Lina and her mother are forced to take a shower with others. While Lina is wishing to be washed away, like the dirt down the drain, Mrs. Arvydas looks like she's in her own private shower. It shows the juxtaposition between hope and despair.
  • Digging

In chapter 33, Lina and her mother are digging holes in the ground when they receive a small break. They try to maintain a sense of humor, but soon Lina contemplates whether she is digging her own grave. This is significant because most of their jobs at the site were to dig holes. Additionally, there is small reference to mental perspective. They could contemplate all the bad, or maintain a sense of humor as they try to do.
  • Where to?

I chose to highlight chapter 60 in my timeline as a significant event from the novel. I did so because of the frantic effort to know what's going on. Everyone is panicking based on rumor that they were being moved yet again. No one knew where: some speculated home, but no one knew for sure. This sense of uncertainty is a significant moment, as they are constantly left in the dark throughout their experience.
  • Tragedy Strikes

Chapter 80 is significant because it is here where Lina's mother dies. Those around at the time of her death, those who were strangers once before, have really been taken back by her death. Even the bald man who often had something to say, was left speechless, and contemplating the meaning of death. Overall, this moment represents the bond they shared with each other during their time in camp.
