  • First Chinese settlers to settle in Canada

The first Chinese that settled in Canada were 50 Artisans (skilled builders), who went with John Meares to help build a trading post.
  • Nootka Crisis

The Chinese were forced to live off of fish, rice, and low payment. Meares brought 70 Chinese in from Canton. After they were brought, the settlement was stolen by the Spanish. This is why it is named the Nootka Crisis. The Spanish captured the Chinese men to make them establish a trademark on the West Coast. Many of them returned to China, while others worked at a mine and were taken to Mexico after.
  • First Opium War

The First Opium War was a chain of the military engaging and fighting between Britain and the Qing dynasty of China between 1839 and 1842. The British captured the Treaty of Nanking, which forced China to increase trading with other countries, while seeking money, Hong Kong gave up to the British. Some nationalists in the twentieth century consider 1839 the start of a century of humiliation, and many historians consider it the beginning of modern Chinese history.
