In 1493, Askia Muhammad, now known as Askia the Great, became ruler of Songhai. He had no right being ruler, since he was not part of the royal family blood line, but he was anyway. Askia the Great was a strict Muslim who built mosques, religious schools, and even completed the five pillars of Islam (hajj and all) just as Mansa Musa did.
