In 1850 Europeans had established a trade route with with Africa. This allowed both Europeans and Africans to gain wealth and power. Eventually however, the Europeans would use this wealth to purchase weapons to later attack the Africans.

In 1857 the East India Company collapsed due to the Sepoy Rebellion. The Sepoy rebellion was caused because the rifles that the Indian Sepoys were given were covered in pork and pig grease. The Sepoys became very offended, as it was a against their relegion to kill pork. Later in 1857, the British Raj system was established. This is where Britain had raj's (or Indian princes) working for them.

The Suez Canal was a manmade canal finished in 1869. Muhammed Ali ordered the construction of the canal. Because of the canal, a sea trade route between India and Europe was made much quicker.

Between 1884 and 1885 many European countries gathered to discuss the colonization of Africa. This event was called the Berlin Confrence. Because of this, every country in Africa except Ethiopia was colonized by the Europeans.

In 1893 Queen Liluokalani took the throne of Hawaii. Queen Liluokalani inherited the throne from her brother. Queen Lilukalani decided that Hawaii should fight imperialist countries such as the USA.

In 1896 Ethiopians defeated invading Italians at the battle of Adwa. Ethiopian soliders managed to do this by having Ethiopian enemies wear down the Itallian forces. Then, Ethiopians defeated the weakened Itallians. This strategy allowed Ethiopia to be the only African country to never be colonized.

In 1898 the Spanish-American war began. It was caused because the United States wanted to increase its global image, and gain colonies. So, the USA decided to attack Spain, a large, weak European country with no allies.

In 1899 the Boer war in South Africa began. This war was caused because The English took over South Africa and caused the Boers to leave. The Boers had to head Northwards, during an event called The Great Trek. However, after encountering hostile native tribes, the Boers decided it best to fight the English for their homes.

By 1914 most of Africa was under European control. Various countries took varying pieces of land from the local tribes. Causing a loss of land and culture for many.
