Europeans landed along Central Africa’s coast and were interested in trade. They built trade relationship based on slave trade. European ships would carry the enslaved. This lead to the Trans-Atlantic Slave trade where captured Africans would be packed into a ship as human cargo many people died during the voyage.

All of the Sahel was under European Control. The Europeans ignored African objections and created boundaries that would cut through ethnic groups. This made African ethnic groups against each other and strengthened European rule. European rule during this time weakened African ethnic groups and African ideals.

In 1914 the British formed the colony of Nigeria from several small ethnic territories. This lead to many different ethnic groups and religious groups living within the boundaries.

Under European rule many Africans benefited from new educational opportunities. Some Africans even demanded a role in government. Educated Africans launched independence movements and in the later part of the century the colonies became independent.

Nigeria gained independence and the ethnic and religious differences lead to a civil war. Religious and ethnic differences still divided Nigeria today.
