When Salva was sitting in school paying attention to the teacher, the class and the teacher all heard a loud CRACK! and Gun shots!

The gunshots stopped and the teacher told everyone to not go home but to go hide in the bushes.

Salva kept hearing loud sounds like BOOM! and he kept running while seeing black smoke behind him. He ran till he couldn't anymore and he found his village and his group. They spent the night in a old barn, and Salva was left alone in the barn the next morning.

Salva was sleeping in a barn and the morning he woke up everyone was gone. They abandoned them.

The lady made people take Salva with them even though he is young. They all heard a noise and it was bees by their be hive. They found honey.

They ate honey and one guy got stung on the tongue by a bee so Salva kept a honeycomb in a leaf for him. Salva met a boy his age named Marial. They are walking to Ethiopia eastward.

Uncle Jewiir was the young brother of Salva's dad. He has served in the army for 2 years. Salva's uncle tells Salva that His friend Mariel has died.

Salva's best friend Marial just died to a lion while sleeping. He finished making canoes in 2 days and are now entering the crocodile biome.

Salva got to the fisherman stop and he was surprised by how much food and crops there are. He ate with his uncle and was delighted. There were millions of mosquitoes and they were everywhere. They traveled to their next destination. The Akobo desert.

Salva's uncle said that he was going to go with him to the refuge camp and then head back to the war to help. Then 7 people came tied his uncle up and shot him. They then ran away. Salva is now all alone.

The group along with Salva buried his uncle from a animal hole. Salva gained confidence and wanted to show the group he is strong. Salva finally made it too Ethiopia. At the refuge camp there was women, men, girls, small children...but most of the were young boys and men.

Salva faces character vs. nature. He stubs his toe on a rock and his toenail falls off. He then kept getting farther and farther away from the group. Salva's uncle tells him that it is not to far away.

Salva made it too the refuge camp and is now staying there. He thought h saw his mother but it wasn't. He thought of what his uncle said then remembered.

Salva made it to the refuge camp. He has stayed for 6 years. The refuge camp is now stating to collapse and close. Salva got more confidence. His life has not really changed because he was kicked out of somewhere again and back where her started.

A man was killed by a crocodile when crossing the river, the soldiers started shooting at the group. Thousand's of people have died. Salva is now traveling to Kenya. More than 12 hundred boys arrived safely to Kenya. It took them 1 year and 1/2. They went from Southern Sudan, to Ethiopia, to Kenya

Salva is now 20 years old. For 5 years he has been living in a refuge camp in Kenya. Salva's name wasn't on the list or the one after that or the one after that. But one Windy afternoon, Salva's name was on the board. He was going to New York, America.

Salva showed perseverance by telling himself to take a deep breath and get through the plane ride. He was having so many thoughts about his new family but pushed himself through it and calmed down.

The conflict Salva is going through is character vs. self. Salva is having a hard time spelling and pronouncing words like rough.

Salva found his dad after 19 years and is now about 30 years old.

Nya, eleven years old, had to walk a long way to get water. With challenges through the way.

Nya got water and put the container on the ground. She always tried to miss or step over the spiky plants with thorns. She felt the pain and say a big thorn in the middle of her heel. She pressed her lips tight to cover the pain.

Nya was walking and she had mud all over her feet. Nya then untied the water container and drank the brown water, Because of her injury of the thorn incident she will take longer to get home then to go to get water.

She made it back home with the water, and she is going to get more. She doesn't live near the lake because of the fighting.

Nya is going back with her sister to get the water. But, Nya has to dig to get the water. She waits for very long times for water to come.

Nya's family members, Dep and her father, go off and hunt food for the family

Nya got sick from drinking the pond water. So did her sister. Nya has to choose if they want to go walking for 2 days to get help from a doctor or stay and let her sister rest.

Akeer had to go to the doctor and get medicine. Nya's younger sister go well as well, but the doctor said that she got sick from the pond water and if the water is dirty, boil it and count to 200 hundred.

Nya has to move again for the season. Two men got out of a jeep and then they started talking about water.

The strange men could've been to soldiers undercover, searching the village for someone.

Nya knew that spot so well. She knew there would be no water there. Only when it rains. Nya was confused because if it was that easy to find water there her village would of a long time ago. The climate wads also dry and hot.

Nya means by the iron giraffe that it is a machine to help clear land.

Water finally came out of the hole in the ground. Everyone was cheering and singing but Nya frowned. The water was not clear. It was brown and heavy looking. It was full of mud!

Nya knew that there was no hope for clean water right in her village. So she went to go get more water at the pond.

Nya's father gathered tools and equipment to start making something.

Nya's dad is building a school! Nya's school is a very far walk away from her village.

Salva finally meets Nya in 2009.

The bag sprang a leak, then again, then again. So the drilling could not go on but the men's boss made them. The crew that was drilling was discouraged and disappointed. The boss would make the workers laugh, but if that didn't work he would persuade them or if that didn't work then he would get angry.

The school was called "Elm Street School". She finally got clean clear water and was thankful to drink it. Nya meets Salva at the end and thanks his tribe for getting the water.
