The raw resources in Africa was their drive for colonization. This was the first time the Europeans started to trade in the center part of the continent. Before this Europeans mainly only had contact with sub-Saharan Africans.

There was gossip that the bottoms of the rifles were greased with beef and pork fat. Since the Sepoys were made of Muslim and Hindus they rebelled gainst the British. The sepopys marched to Dehli and captured it and the rebelion spread throughout India. This was the Sepoy Mutiny and it took over a year for the East India Company to gain control again. In 1858 Britiain decided to rule India directly and the British Raj began.

A human made waterway that cut throught the Isthmus of Suez. It connected the Mediterranean and Red Seas. It was bulit with French money from private interest groups.

In Berlin 14 European countries met to decide the division of Africa. This way countries wouldn't fight over who got what land. No African rulers were invited, and by 1914 only Liberia and Ethiopia were free from European control.

When she took the throne she called for a new constitution to increase her power. It would also give native Hawaiians more rights. To prevent a group of American businessmen plotted to overthrow her. Later that year she was then removed from power.

Menelik II of Ethiopia built up his army and got modern weapons, so they could defend themselves against European invasion.He discovered that the treaty he had signed with Italy was giving away a small portion of Ethiopoa to Italy. Menelik declared war and his army defeated the Italians. He still kept up his arsonel so they could defend themselves against countries to come.

Filopinos were unhappy because they didn't want to trade one colonizer for a different one. The US had promised the Filipinos independence, used them just as Spain had. The Filipino nationalists declared independence and established the Philippine Republic. It took until 1902 for the US to defeat the nationalists and they promised that they would help prepare them for self rule. They modernised the Philippines, but still made them grow cash crops which created food shortages.

When diamonds and gold were found in South Africa the Boers blamed the British for all the new adventurers there. They soon declared war againsnt the British and it became the first "total" war. This was the first time guerilla tactics were used. Black South Africans were also involved and over 14,000 died. Britain finally won the war and in 1910 the Boer Republics created the Union of South Africa, controlled by Britain.

By 1914 most of Africa is under European control except Liberia and Ethiopia. These two nations used great military tactics to keep safe from outside European influence.
