Shah Jahan built this monument in honor of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died after the birth of her 14th child.

The building was really finsihed in 1648, but all the gardens and decore were finsihed about 5 years later in 1653. So, you can say that the whole entire site of the Taj Mahal was finsihed and ready for people to look at around 1653.
