  • Birth

    Birth
I was born on February 7th, 1902. I lived in Hong Kong until I was 14 with my mother and father, and brother. I had heard about the Golden Mountain from the people in my village, but my parents refused to talk about it. My uncle let the Middle Kingdom to work in America, and father hasn't talked to him since he left.
  • Parents' Death

    Parents' Death
My parents were killed in a car accident when I was 11. I was left alone with my brother, who was 16 at the time. I was scared that we wouldn't survive on our own, but he was working and had enough money to buy us the little food we could have. He wanted to support me more than he was, but wanted to wait until I was older to go to The Golden Mountain.
  • Leaving China

    Leaving China
My brother and I left China for Angel Island in March of 1916. I was fourteen at the time, and my brother thought I was old enough to be able to leave The Middle Kingdom and go to the Golden Mountain with him.
  • Experiencing Prejudice

    Experiencing Prejudice
I was living in Chinatown with another family for the first few months. I hadn't found my brother yet, and I was worried that I never would. I hadn't' heard anything from him, and I feared that he had to be sent back to China since he was sick on the boat. The people outside of Chinatown were rude, and prejudice against us. They gave us mean looks and said rude words to us.
  • Arrival at Angel Island

Arriving at The Golden Mountain wasn't as amazing or mesmerising as I imagined it before. It was dirty, and no one looked happy or excited. Although it wasn't the best experience, I was happy that at least I was off the boat. My brother and I had to go in seperate lines, and he didn't pass the doctor's check.
  • Finding my Brother

    Finding my Brother
I had finally found my brother again after almost six months. He told me that since he was sick, he was sent back to The Middle Kingdom, but found another boat ride back after he was better. We are now living in our own house in Chinatown, and are both working. We make enough money to keep us alive without any help. I'm proud of how well we are doing and I hope we can stay like this.
