20 Literacy Memories

  • Aquaworld

Aquaworld was the day-care center I went to before and after I would go to pre-school at Wright and each day I was there I remember before walking to Wright school, all of us kids would sit in a cirlce while one of the assistant child care teachers would read to us.

    20 Literacy Memories

  • Pre-School Book Fair

    Pre-School Book Fair
Around conference time, there is usually a scholastic book fair and this was my first book fair as a pre-schooler so I didn't know much about books but I still wanted to participate and pick out a book. The book I chose was Shark Man by Rodney Fox. Why? I don't know but I loved that book, read it and looked at the pictures constantly, and I still have it to this day.
  • Alphabet

My kindergarten teacher reviewed our alphabet in the beginning of the year and she did it one and one so the best time to do so was during free time/nap time, so after she reviewed with you and you got all of them correct, you got to take a nap and watch a movie.
  • College kid

My mom was a full time student and worker when I was about 5 years old and I remember one time when she couldn't find anyone to watch me, so she brought me to her college class. I was only 5 yrs old so I stayed quiet until the class was over but as we walked through the building I was paying close attention to the signs and words on the walls throughout the halls trying to read them.
  • Study buddy

I mentioned before that my mom was a full time college student when I was 5 years old but never that she was an x-ray student. Her way to study was to study on me-should would have me help her with her notecards and when she studied every bone in the body, she would point them out on me and it helped me fall asleep.
  • Christmas 2004

    Christmas 2004
For Christmas 2004, my grandparents gifted me The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis and when the movie came out, my mom wouldn't let me see it until I read the entire book.
  • Advanced Reading Group

In 5th grade, several students were chosen out of the class to be put into an advanced reading group where while the rest of the class did independent reading, we would meet with the teacher to read a higher level reading book and then discuss it within the group. It reminded me of what a book club was like.
  • Speech

In 5th grade, one of the big end of the year projects were to research an animal and write a 3-5 min speech on it and all of the information we gathered on it. My mom practiced with me time and time again until I got it perfect -- everything from the timing, eye contact, my voice, etc. I gave my presentation in class the same way I had been practicing and it got me to go to the Kiwanis Club to present it there as one of the few in the class. But I failed miserably.
  • Safe-sitter

    Safe-sitter
My mom used to work for Mercy for a while so when she heard about a Safe-sitter course, she immediately signed me up. It's a lenghtly class with intructors that go over the basics of babysitting and the safety precaustions. The class provided a folder with reading material that applied to everything that was talked about and we used it as a guide.
  • Spelling Bee

One of the first few days of my 6th grade english/language arts class my teacher held a spelling bee within the class and I remember myself and another student being the last two and the word that we both lost by was Pretzel...I was so disappointed in myself because I felt like I was or should have been smart enough to know how to spell pretzel.
  • Portfolio

In my 7th grade english class we had to create a "portfolio" and one of the things in the portfolio had to be a poem but since I didn't know of any at the time or wrote any, I used a rap song....I have since come across many poems that I love but apparently I took the easy way out back then.
  • Web design

I took web design as an elective my freshman year of high school and to my surprise we did a lot more writing than I was expecting. For our assignments we would have to write flyers or create web pages about whatever the situation was. I feel like my vocaubuary played a huge role on the assignments in that class.
  • Advanced English 11

My english 11 class started my second semester of my junior year of high school and before the class even started, I was excited about it because my teacher was Dawn Poepping. If you had her as a teacher, you knew how much of an amazing teacher she was and if you didn't, you wanted her as your teacher. She has taught me so much about reading and writing in the short amount of time that I have known her.
  • AP Psychology

I took AP Psych my senior year of high school and from the very start I noticed a difference in the reading material and had to get accustomed to it in order to do well in the class. Also we practiced FRQ (free response questions) on every exam to prepare us for the AP test in May and I think that has helped a lot with my writing.
  • The next Donald Trump

    The next Donald Trump
My junior year of high school I took a marketing class that was based on the show, The Apprentice. Our teacher would put us into groups each week and we would have to come up with something that fit whatever the prompt was and esentially come up with a plan to create and market it and had to give a presentation to the class on the final result. At the end of the week we would watch an episode of The Apprentice. The presentations really helped me with my writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Medical Terminology

My high school offered Blackhawk Technical College courses for credits and I always saw myself working in the medical field so I thought it would be wise to take a medical terminology class. I was a lot more than I expected and more diffiult than most people in my class anticipated but I feel like somethings came easily to me. There was obviously a book but it contained mostly prefixes, suffixes and connecting words to make medical words. I can still recall a good amount of material.
  • First College English Professor

    First College English Professor
My first semester of college, I atteneded the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and I was taking english my first semester. Everything seemed as if it were looking up in the beginning of class but I soon began to realize how bad things were going. I have never had a less interactive and careless professor. I didn't learn anything about reading or writing from him. I felt like I could have taken an online class and done better because that's what it was already like.
  • The Night Before Christmas

    The Night Before Christmas
My mom's parents rarely ever read to her but when they did, it was once a year, and it was The Night Before Christmas on Christmas Eve so she wanted to keep the tradition alive. For as long as I can remember, up until this day, she reads that book to my sister and I every year on Christmas Eve before we go to bed.
  • Pharmacy salesperson-pharmacy tech

I recenetly got promoted at my job from a pharmacy salesperson to a pharmacy tech and a majority of what I know now, I learned from experience but I have been so intriguied by pharmacy lately that I decided to go to the public library near me and pick up drug books, a pharmacy tech exam book and the PCAT (pharmacy college admission test)
  • Book worm

I don't know who introduced me to the Chicken Noodle Soup books or the Ellen Hopkins books, but in the grades 6-8, those were my favorite books to read and that's always the first thing I searched for in the library and I was constantly reading. I even remember during independent reading time in the library, I would hide between the shelves and just sit down and read until it was time to go.
