    The first Russian parliament met this day. Its leaders were moserates who wanted Russia to become a constitutional monarchy similar to Britian. But because he was hesitant to share his power the czar dissolved the Duma after ten weeks.

    Nicholas II made a fateful decision to drag Russia into World War I. Russia was unprepared to handle the military and econimic costs. Its weak generals and poorly equipped troops were no match for the German army.

    Women's textile workers in Petrograd led a citywalk strike. The next 5 days there were riots flared up over shortages of bread and fuel.

    In November of 1917 Russia got the worlds first communist government. Lead by Lenin, communists took over the city of St. Petrograd and removed the Provisional Government from power.

    Russia surendered a large part of its territory to Germany and its allies. The humiliating terms of this treaty triggered widespread anger amoung many Russians. They objected to the Bolsheviks and their polocies and to the murder of the royal family.

    In Russia war raged. Several Western nations, including the US, sent military aid and forces to Russia to help the White Army. The Russian's civil war proved far more deadly then the earlier revolutions

    Lenin temporarily put aside his plan for a state-controlled economy. Instead, the resorted to a small-scale version of capitalism called the New Economic Policy (NEP). The NEP basically is they allowed peasants to sell their surplus crops instead of turning them over to the government.

    Lenin had a stroke, but survived and started a petition for heading up the Communist Party. Later Joesph Stalin came to power. He was a general secretary of the Communist Party. He was cold, hard, and impersonal, Lenin thought he was dangerous and didn't think he should have all the power when he dies.
