    Battle of Atlantic The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest continuous military campaign in World War II, running from 1939 to the defeat of Germany in 1945. German used submarines(U-boats) to sink supply ships coming to Britain from other countries. Canada set up convoys (groups of 50-60 supply ships) that were protected by corvettes (small fast gunboats). Safely escorted 25,000 merchant ships to Britain and 1000s to Russia.

On the same morning as the attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, forces of the Empire of Japan attacked British Hong Kong. The Japanese attack began shortly after 08:00 on 8 December 1941, less than eight hours after the Attack on Pearl Harbor. The Canadians helped to defend Hong Kong.

The assault began at 5:00 a.m. and by 10:50 a.m. The Allies wanted to scare the Germans so they would move soldiers away from Russia(USSR) and wanted to find out more about German coastal defences in France. 900 Canadians died, 1000 wounded.

The Canadians helped hold the town Ortona -- take the streets and houses by “mouse-holing”. Canadians losses included 176 officers and 2163 men, but at last, Ortona was in Canadian hands.Mouse-holing is a tactic used in urban warfare, in which soldiers create access to adjoining buildings by blasting wall.
