  • 2200 BCE

    6.1 - Ancient China - Yu finds the Xia Dynasty

    In 2200BC , one king that ruled China , Yu the Great, is said to have founded the Xia dynasty. There were a lot of floods during his lifetime so he dug up channels to drain the water to the ocean. This took him more than 10 years. Archaeologists haven't found evidence about the Xia which make the tales about them true.

    8.1 - Ancient Greece - Civilization of Minoans and Mycenaeans begins

    By 2000 BC the Minoans built an advanced society on the island, Crete. This island was south of the Aegean in the eastern Mediterranean. Then the Mycenaeans built towns in the Greek mainland. Both the civilizations influenced the whole of the Aegean region. It also helped shape cultures in Greece.

    This chapter includes the Minoans(2000BC) , Mycenaeans, dark age and classical age.

    Chapter 6 - Ancient China

    China was one of the earliest civilization. This chapter includes dynasties like the Xia (2200BC), Shang (1500BC), Zhou (1050-400BC), Qin (211-206BC) and the Han (206BC-220AD). It also includes some geography of China.

    10.1 - Ancient Rome Republic - Romulus becomes king.

    Even though the story of Romulus and Remus is some how considered a legend753, anc historians still believe that Romulus was the first king of Rome. He took the throne in 753BC. Most historians believe that he was the first to take the throne because Rome’s name came from the front of Romulus’ name.

    8.2 - Ancient Greece (Athens) - Draco creates strict laws.

    A group of rebels failed to overthrow the aristocrats (rich landowners). A man named Draco created a new set of laws for Athens because of what happened. The laws were harsh and strict.

    6.2 - Ancient China - Confucianism begins.

    Confucius was a good student who mastered many subjects at school. He grew up to be a teacher and never thought his teachings would change the Chinese life and thought. He said Chinese needed to return to ethics and practices from a time when they knew what their positions were in the society. The ideas of Confucius were called Confucianism.

    9.1 - Ancient Greece - Cyrus’ revolt against the Medes.

    When the Persians were ruled by the people called Medes for 150 years, Cyrus II led a successful Persian revolt against the Medes. After that Cyrus won independence for Persia and conquered the Medes. This victory marked the beginning of the Persian Empire. Cyrus let conquered people keep their own customs. Historians now call gipphim Cyrus the Great.

    This chapter includes Spartans(between 900-600BC), Athenians(same as Spartans), Persians(550BC) , Macedonians.

    10.2 - Ancient Rome Republic - Rome officials create the Laws of the Tewelve Tables

    Rome officials were responsible for making sure every citizen followed the city’s laws. These laws weren’t written publicly so the only people who knew what the laws were, were the patricians who made them. Other citizens were angry that they got punished when they didn’t follow the rules that the officials didn’t write down. Rome’s first written law code was on the 12 bronze tables. These tables/tablets were displayed in the Forum.

    9.2 - Ancient Greece - The Peloponnesian War begins

    The Pelopponesian war was a war between Athens and Sparta that threatened to tear all of Greece apart. This war went on for 10 years until they made a truce. Athens kept its empire and Spartans went home.

    8.3 - Ancient Greece - Aesop is born

    Aesop is famous for his fables (short stories that teach the reader a lesson about life of give advice on how to live) . However, he was a strange man. Historians still don't know whether or not Aesop ever really live. But many ancient legends are written about him. Historians think that fables that were thought to be written by him, were actually written by other people and collected under his name.

    9.3 - Ancient Greece - Phillip II becomes kings Macedonia

    Phillip spent the first year fighting invaders who wanted to take over his kingdom. When he defeated his invaders, he was launching his invasion of his own. His main target was Greece. He was very smart and made his army into a Phalanx. He also let them have long spears so that way they could be more powerful and spread out.

    6.3 - Ancient China - Shi Huangdi unifies China

    The Qin king Ying Zheng succeeded in unifying China. He gave himself the title Shi Huangdi which means "first emperor" . He followed legalism . He created a strong government with strict laws and harsh punishments.

    9.4 - Ancient Greece - Archimedes invents water screws to bring water to the fields.

    Archimedes was a Greek scientist/engineer who created an invention that farmers use to bring water to the fields. These were called the water screws. They can bring water from a lower level to a higher level.

    6.4 - Ancient China - Emperor Wudi takes the throne.

    Emperor Wudi took the throne. He raised taxes and took lands from lords to get a stronger central government. Under Wudi, Confucianism became China's official government philosophy.

    10.3 - Ancient Rome Republic - Tiberius takes the office.

    Tiberius took the office in 133BC. He wanted to create farms for poor Romans. The farms purpose was to keep the poor people happy and prevent rebellions. However, the wealthy citizens did not support this idea therefore there was conflict. During the conflict, Tiberius was killed.

    11.2 - Ancient Rome empire - Jews waits for the Messiah.

    When Romans took over Judaea a lot of the Jews believed that the Messiah will soon appear. Jewish prophets went around Judaea announcing that the Messiah would come. So they waited for the Messiah.

    11.1 - Ancient Rome empire - Romans take over Gaul

    Romans had taken over all of Gaul and also much of Central Europe. They were under the emperor called Claudius. The Romans conquered most of the island of Britain. They controlled Asia Minor , Mesopotamia and the east coast of the Mediterranean.

    6.5 - Ancient China - Buddhism changes Chinese cultures.

    By AD 200, Buddhist altars stood in the emperor's palace. Buddhism's introduction to China is an example of diffusion. Chinese culture changed because of the new faith. Chinese became Buddhist monks and nuns. Artists carved towering statues of a Buddha into mountain walls.

    Justinian had a passion to reunite the old Roman Empire. His armies conquered Italy and a lot of land around th Mediterranean. He had many enemies which threatened him to drive him from Constantinople but his wife Theodora gave him advice to keep fighting. So he did.

    The Han dynasty also made other innovation's in science that developed our lives today. They created a sundial which uses the position of shadows cast by the sun to tell the time of the day. That invention influenced us and today we have what we call a clock!

    One way Greeks honored their gods were by holding sports competitions. The largest took place every four years at Olympia. Held in honor of Zeus, this event was called the Olympic Games. The olympics did stop for a while but then in 2004 people began to host it again. It is still going in the world today.

    The greatest Greek doctor was Hippocrates. He wanted to figure out a cure to cure diseases. He is better known today for his ideas about how doctors should behave.

    The Latin language was the Romans’ language. Today there are some countries that use Latin. These people are called Latino.

    Christianity is also a religion used today.This religion was based on the traditions of Judaism but devleoped as a sepereate religion.
