The heir to the Austro - Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinandand his wife paid a visit to Sarajevo, the captitol of Bosina on June 28,1914. The pair was shot point blank killing them both. They were traveling through the streets of Sarajevo in an open car. The killer was Gavrilo Princip, he was serbian and a member of a group called the black hand.
Since Gavrilo Princip was serbian , Austria decided to punish Serbia.

Russia, Serbia's alley began moving it's army towards the Russian-Austrian border as a response Austria declaring war on Serbia. Expecting Germany to join Austria they also moved their armies by the German borders. For this reason Germany declared war on Russia. Russia looked for it's ally France for help, Germany did not wait and declated war on France as well. This is significant because it shows how allies and alliances led to world war 1 .
