  • Walter has dinner with the Finches

    When Walter Cunningham has dinner at the Finche's house, Scout sees the regular habits of poorer folk for the first time. Being that the theme is the destruction of innocence in a child, it can be seen here. Scout expects more from Walter and doesn't understand his habits, like drowning his food in syrup. Walter doesn't eat as much as others so he's going to enjoy It
  • The children are shot at by Mr. Radley

    In the incident on the Radley residence when Scout, Jem and Dill were shot at, there is certainly a level of maturity that would proceed. Nothing will make you grow up faster than fearing for your life. It also have the children the realization of some of the evils that exist in Maycomb
  • Jem and Scout find soap carvings

    Upon finding soap carvings in a tree near the Radley place, Jem and Scout are in awe but also rather creeped out. For a while now they have been finding things in the tree but this time they found soap carving of themselves. there is certainly level creepiness that comes with that. They were obviously being watched.
  • Atticus agrees to defend Tom Robinson

    after Atticus agreed to defend Tom Robinson many people Scout knew started to call him names. Ugly and very insulting names. Scout had never seen this kind of rudeness and was shocked by how mean people can be.
  • the children go to Calpurnia's church

    when Scout, Dill and Jem went to Calpurnia's church they saw another side of racism. having hardly been exposed to racism itself, it was shocking to go up to a church and be ridiculed a member of the church. The children now had a small taste of what racism felt like for the colored folk in their town. They also witnessed Calpurnia being ridiculed for acting white. It was a rude awakening for all the kids.
  • Scout stops a lynch mob

    Caught in the middle of a lynch mob after Tom Robinson, Scout tries to make conversation with one of the members. the innocence of Scout'a conversation broke up the mob. It showed that there was a lack of innocence in the world and Scout was a reminder that there still was some left
  • The Tom Robinson trial

    This was the ultimate punch in the gut of innocence. it was apparent to everyone, even the children, that Tom Robinson was innocent. Though the turnout of the jury was all guilty. with it came a wave of confusion, anger and sadness. Even Jem who had been trying to act manlier ended up crying.
  • Cecil Jacobs talks about Hitler in class

    After the trial showed how prejudice is Maycomb County is, Cecil Jacobs brought up Hitler in class and stirred controversy and hypocrisy. The teacher gave input on how she thought Hitlers acts in the Holocaust were horrible and prejudice. After the prejudice that went on in the trial it was evident that there were some hypocrites among Maycomb County. This confused and annoyed Scout
  • The murderous attempt on Scout

    after Atticus made Mr. Ewell look like a fool in front of the entire county, he set out for revenge. this was the final straw that made Scout realize the true evil exists in the world. What destroys a child's innocence more than an attempt at their life? Not just a warning shot like before, this was directly targeted at them. Jem was left injured and a ham costume saved Scout's life. Truly traumatizing.
  • Boo Radley saves Scout and Jem's lives

    After the attempt on Jem and Scout's lives the mysterious Boo Radley takes them to safety. This was all kinds of shocking for Scout. It really showed that there is some people you can trust that he didn't expect and others that can't be trusted so much like Mr. Ewell
