    The Boo Radley Game Begins: pgs 30-31
    Jem, Scout, and Dill created the "Boo Radley" game where they mimic Radley's life or what they think his life is like. This is the beginning of the childrens curiosity with Boo and their hopes to finally see him. This game would have nerver began if it werent for Jem and Dill.
  • Jem's Nightmare: pgs 42-43

    Jem's Nightmare: pgs 42-43
    Jem, Scout, and Dill make a secret plan to finally see or talk to Boo Radley. They had begun by peeking through his side window and trying to leave a note for him to read. Although, not much could be seen so they had run out back of Radley's house. Jem ran straight in Mr. Arthur Radley who had a shotgun in his hand. Radley ha shot at the children but they had made it out alive. However, Jem had lost his pants at the scene. This would have taught Jem a lesson about the games they play.

    After Jem's incident with Mr. Radley he knew he had to go back for his pants. Later that night he snuck back over to the Radley house only to find that his pants were neatly folded with a tear that was sewn up. This had haunted Jem because he came to the realization that nobody knew what he was thinking other than himself. After this he semed to lay low with the Radley family.

    Ole One Shot: pg 81
    Jem had been recently disappointed with his father Atticus because he was conviced that Atticus had no special talents. His perspective was changed once Atticus had to shoot a dog with rabies. When this event happened Jem was already interested with his own gun and it made him feel proud that he learned his father had the deadest shot in town.

    Jem Lost his Temper: pg 85
    One evening Jem had been walking home with Scout when the meanest lady in town, Mrs. Dubose, began screaming degrading comments about Atticus. Jem seems to be the mature child out of the two but that night he could not help himself but lose his temper. Jem took Scout's brand new baton and vandalized the old lady's entire garden. At this point this is the first time Jem had lost his temper over Atticus.

    After spending a month or so reading to Mrs. DUbose for his punishment for ruining her garden she had passed away. Once Jem had learned of her death he also learned that she was a morphine addict. Atticus explained that he helped her through her addiction and gain her freedom back. As a token of her grattitude she left Jem a single camellia to symbolize her freedom.
  • Calpurnia's Double Life: pgs 105-106

    Calpurnia's Double Life: pgs 105-106
    Jem and Scout had attended Calpurnia's church only to find out how different she is around her own people. Jem had observed that Calpurnia had spoken much differently and acted much differently towards her fellow people. This affected Jem because he did not understand why she chose to live two different ways. Jem finally understood that one person cant change the way of others and act better than them and how that would be Calpurnia if she didnt act different.
  • Atticus and the Gang: pg 126-130

    Atticus and the Gang: pg 126-130
    Jem had realized that Atticus was acting strange so Scout, Dill, and him snuck out of the house to follow Atticus' wherabouts. They ended up following him to the Maycomb County Jail where Tom Robinson was being held. All of a sudden the children saw a group of men arriving towards Atticus and Jem got a strange feeling. Jem knew that those men were going to hurt Atticus. Scout ended up running out and making the men leave but Atticus had showed Jem affectrion for coming and worrying about him.

    Tom Robinson's trial had finally begun and all the children had left to go see it. When they arrived they had sat on the top balcony with Reverend Sykes. Jem becomes respectful and anticipates hearing his father defend Tom. Eventually, he will begin to feel hopeful which may not be the best thing for Jem.
  • Jem Feels Hope: pgs 149-150

    Jem Feels Hope: pgs 149-150
    Jem begins feeeling hopeful for Tom Robinson. He believes that when Atticus had proved that Bob Ewell was left handed that they would win the case. Jem wants to believe the unbelievable which is a black man winning over a young white womans accusation.

    Tom's Sentence: pgs 180-181
    Once Maycomb County heard Tom's guilty verdict it had affected Jem more than anybody. He began to cry and yell about how it was unfair for Tom to be given a guilty verdict. His hopes had been crushed and now he will look upon life a little differently. Jem will begin to understand social standards as well.
  • Atticus's Altercation

    Jem learns how Atticus and Bob Ewell had gotten into an altercation and Ewell had spat in Atticus's face. This had angered Jem because he feels protective over his father. He aslo fears for his father because Ewell had threatened Atticus and told him that he would get him back no matter what it takes.
  • Social Standards: pds 192-193

    Jem has a conversation with Scout about how he finally understand how society works. He tells her about the social standards and where everybody's family fits in. Since he understand he says he can relate to why Boo Radley stays inside. This is important for Jem because it shows that he is growing up and becoming more mature.
  • Hitler: pg 210

    Hitler: pg 210
    Scout had asked Jem about what makes blacks different than Jews and how she believes Miss Gates is a hypocrite. She believes this because she claimed that her teacher felt bad for the Jews but had no remorse for Tom Robinson when he was truly innocent. As soon as Scout mentioned the trial jem had exploded on her and told her never to mention it again. This tells you that Jem is hiding his feelings about the trial and that he still feels upset over the outcome.
  • Jem's Broken Arm: pgs 221-222

    Jem's Broken Arm: pgs 221-222
    Bob Ewell had kept his promise by getting back at Atticus when he attempts to attack Jem and Scout. Luckily Jem only suffered from a broken arm due to Boo Radley saving his life and killing Bob Ewell. This will teach Jem what true gratitude means and how the case that means so much to him will never truly leave their family.
