Because he hails from Mississippi, Dill Harris is an outsider, but having relatives in Maycomb, as well as being a child, grants him immediate acceptance in the town. He serves as a extra play mate for Jem and Scout.

    During their time together, Scout, Jem, and Dill will often play games with the Radely House. Sometimes, they'll try to touch it, or try to get Boo Radely outside. They all have a horrible image of what Boo Radely is like. They believe he eats rodents and cats, and that he'll kill any kids he catches.

    Jem finds his pair of pants he lost while escaping the Radely House
    One day, when Scout, Jem, and Dill were playing with the Radely house, they were shot at by Boo's older brother Nathan. While trying to escape, Jem got his pants caught on a fence and had to abandon them to get away. When he returned to get them, they were fixed and folded for him, Jem believes this is Boo Radely.

    Atticus wakes Scout and helps her put on her bathrobe and coat and goes outside with her and Jem. Miss Maudie’s house is on fire. The neighbors help her save her furniture, and the fire truck arrives in time to stop the fire from spreading to other houses, but Miss Maudie’s house burns to the ground. In the confusion, Boo Radely drapes a blanket over Scout. When Atticus later asks her about it, she has no idea who put it over her.

    The Lesson has both a literal and metaphorical meaning. Atticus teaches them that mockingbirds harm no one, and all they do is make music that's why it's a sin to kill one. The metaphorical meaning is that you should never take advantage of someone weaker than you.

    Tom Robinson is a African American accused of raping a white women, Mayella Ewell. Even when he knows that he will lose the case, because everyone in Maycomb is racist to one degree or another, Atticus continues to fight to teach his kids another lesson. He tries to teach his kids that even when you know you will lose you have to continue fighting.

    A group of men come to lynch Tom Robinson but Atticus defends him
    One night, Tom Robinson is being moved to the county jail before his trial, and Atticus sits outside the door. A group of men come to try and lynch Tom but Atticus blocks their way. Scout, Jem, and Dill come and Scout begins to talk to one of the men. The group ends up leaving.

    Scout, Jem, and Dill watch the case with the rest of the town. Atticus does a great job with his defense and kids think he will win. However, in Maycomb a black man will never win over white men and Tom Robinson is found guilty. The kids are crushed, and Bob Ewell swears his revenge on Atticus for making a fool out of him.

    Bob Ewell attacks Jem and Scout with a switchblade
    On Halloween, Scout and Jem make their way home from a costume contest when they are suddenly attacked by Bob Ewell. Jem breaks his leg, and Scout can barely see in her coustume, but Boo Radely comes out to save the day, and kills Bob Ewell. The kids have no idea what has happend and they make it home safe.

    Scout finally understands the truth about Boo Radely
    After being attacked, Scout understands that Boo is not at all what he seemed to be. Boo is a nice, and almost child like person. Scout has also now absorbed the lesson on mockingbirds her father has taught her.
