  • Dill Hears About Boo Radley

Dill arrives in Maycomb in chapter 1 and impresses Scout and Jem with his stories and imagination. But Dill is curious about the Radley place. So Jem and Scout tell Dill the story of the house that they’ve heard countless times. This shows character vs society because it shows how unjust society assumptions about Boo Radley changed his life.
  • Ms. Caroline Learns That Scout Can Read

In chapter 2, Scout starts the first grade. Her first grade teacher is Miss Caroline. Miss Caroline has Scout read in front of the class, and when she learns that Scout is literate, she is disgusted. This shows a character vs society conflict because it shows how at this time and age, it’s not very common for little girls like Scout to be reading, so it shows Scout is going against societal norms and practices and this disgusts Miss Caroline.
  • Aunt Alexandra Judges Scout’s Attire

In chapter nine, The Finches celebrated Christmas at Finch’s Landing with Atticus’s brother, sister, her husband, and their son. Atticus’s brother, Aunt Alexandra, disapproves of Atticus’s ways of raising his children and tells Scout to dress more ladylike. This shows individual vs society because Scout is not dressing like society expects her to dress.
  • Jem and Scout are Ashamed That Atticus Is Not Like Other Fathers

In chapter 10, at school, kids would talk very highly of their fathers and talk about what they could do. In these conversations, Jem and Scout cannot talk about Atticus like this because he’s too old and doesn’t do the things a typical father would. This shows in individual vs society, because Atticus is not like the general, common, normal, and average father that is expected at this time, and he gets unfairly judged by his children.
  • The entire town is talking about the Finch family.

In chapter 14, word of mouth is getting around that Atticus is defending a black man. People would not be talking this much about any of Atticus’s cases but now are simply because he is defending a black man. This is an example of individual vs. society because Atticus is challenging societies expectations of a lawyer as prestigious as himself by defending a black man.
  • A Lynch Mob Attacks Tom Robinson.

Tom Robinson has to go against society because he is a black man accused of rape. In chapter 15, a lynch mob attacked Tom Robinson while he was being moved to Maycomb jail. The group of men would not have formed a lynch mob to attack Tom Robinson if he was a white man being accused of rape instead of a black man.
  • Mr. Dolphus Raymond pretends to be drunk while hanging out with black folks from Maycomb.

Mr Raymond goes against society’s standards by being a rich white man that prefers to hang out with the black community of Maycomb. In chapter 20 he says that people don’t support his lifestyle and doesn’t want to offend anyone. To not offend anyone, he disguises his reason for his lifestyle as being drunk.
  • Tom Robinson is Found Guilty.

In chapter 21, Tom Robinson is found guilty despite the mountain of evidence Atticus provided to prove his innocence. Society goes against Tom Robinson because he is still found guilty only because he is a black man accused by a white woman.
  • Jem Cries After Tom Robinsion's Trial

In chapter 22, we see jem cry after the trial. He is doing so because he is heartbroken when he finds out that Tom Robinson was found guilty, This shows individual VS Society because jem thought that this was an unfair trial and learned the people of Maycomb are racist and have prejudices against black people like Tom Robinson.
  • Bob Ewell Threatens Atticus

In chapter 22, Bob Ewell Threatens Atticus by swearing revenge on him. This shows individual vs. society because this was an effect of Atticus challenging society and defending a black man.
  • Tom Robinson was Shot and Killed

In chapter 24, the defendant Tom Robinson was shot 17 times in the back after trying to escape the county jail. This shows individual VS Society because after his verdict he knew if he were to testify for an appeal that he would still get a unfair trial because he is a colored person
  • Heck Tate and Atticus keep quiet about Bob Ewell's death

In chapter 30, Boo Radley killed Bob Ewell by defending Jem and Scout, but they don't want to let the people of Maycomb to know that Boo Radley really killed Bob so they make a claim that he fell on his knife. This shows individual VS Society because Boo Radley defended the kids but if the town would have found out they would all think he is a bad person because he murdered someone.
