  • Scout and Jem find the items in the Radley's tree

This event consists of the times when Jem and Scout find the items inside the tree at the Radley's house. This begins to deepen the kids' curiosity about Boo Radley, as well as the story begins to hint at importance of Boo later in the novel. As Scout and Jem find each item in the tree, the item raises more and more questions with them. These questions will not go unanswered.
  • Tim Johnson (dog) is shot

This event consists of when Atticus shoots the dog who is expected to be infected with rabies. Jem before feels as of his dad is uninteresting, and this feeling begins to seep into how he thinks about himself. Shortly following the event, Jem comes to realize his father's ways and begins to appreciate not only atticus, but himself too.
  • Aunt Alexandra's arrival

This event consists of the time shortly after Alexandra's arrival, when Jem and Scout meet her. This is particularly significant because Alexandra will become an important character in the later story. She will become more and more important to the characters' development too, as the story progresses.
  • Failed lynch

This event consists of the time at the jail where Scout, Jem, and Dill unknowingly saved Atticus from getting hurt by the mob who were after Mr. Robinson. This event in particular makes the reader realize how Jem and Scout truly are just kids and that they have no idea of the social rules about them. Atticus also begins to appreciate Scout and Jem more, although he always had appreciated them.
  • The trial

This is the defining moment of the book, the climax, some would say. The entire plot is based around, and builds up to, this trial. From the start of the book, atticus is talking about the trial, working on paperwork for the trial, etc. We finally as readers get to see what all the talk about the trial is for.
  • Attack on Scout and Jem

This event consists of the time when Scout and Jem were attacked by B. Ewell, and the time shortly after. This part does away with Bob Ewell, what could be consodered the book's antagonist, and ties up many loose ends. The family finally gets a look at Arthur "Boo" Radley here and resolves that whole side of the story. This event is the last major event in the story.
