The Estates- General of 1789 was an assembly representing the French estates gathering to propose solutions to France's financial problems.It was the first meeting of the Estates-General since 1614 and was summoned by King Louis XVI. The King tried to keep the three estates separate but after his attempts failed, the Estates-General became the National Assembly.

When the members of the third estate realized they would always been outvoted they formed the National Assembly. When food became scarce and civilians were tired of the monarch's tyranny, French revolutionaries from Paris stormed to dismantle Bastille, which was a royal prison which became a symbol of corruption in the monarchy. This event is important because it started the French Revolution.

Before the revolution took place, Saint Dominique was known as one of the most productive export economies of the Americas.The enslaved people working on these plantations came together and fought against the slave-masters. As the revolution spread it became more organized.This event is important because it led to the abolition of slavery in Haiti which was formerly a French colony.

King Louis XVI was known to be shy and indecisive during his reign.This led to his downfall when the unrest in France began. He was sentenced to be executed on the day he was suspected of conspiracy with foreign powers.After he attempted to flee the country, he was tried and charged with treason for abandoning his country. With him died the French monarchy.

The Directory lasted four years. It suffered from widespread corruption. It was taken over during a coup d'état lead by Napoleon. No one was killed during this coup d'état but it led to Napoleon being put into power.

The name refers to the attacks and counterattacks between Toussaint Louverture's troops and André Rigaud's forces during the Haitian Revolution.Both sides respected the other but Riguad failed to acknowledge Louverture's superior authority which caused the War of Knives.

This constitution created a form of government called a Consulate. The document did not declare Napoleon as self-head of the state but instead as head of a more liberal, authoritarian, and centralized government.Napoleon later abolished this consulate and declared himself emperor. the Consulate abolished most of the class and privilege.This document is important because it ended the French Revolution.

Leader of the Haitian Revolution, Toussaint Louverture , called for a Constitutional Assembly to write a constitution for Saint-Domingue, even though it was still a colony of France at the time. This is important because it made this revolution the most successful of its kind.

Dessalines joined the revolution and becomes lieutenant of leader Toussaint Louverture.When Louverture was captured, Dessalines and others at first submitted to Napoleon but rose to rebellion again when they learned of his plans to reintroduce slavery. Dessalines continued many of Louverture's policies.This is important because Dessalines, as governor-general, claimed the entire island of Haiti as an independent country on January 1st.

On September 16, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, who was a Catholic priest, started the Mexican War of Independence with his Grito de Dolores, or “Cry of Dolores” which referred to the town of Dolores, Mexico.This is important because it called for the end of SPanish rule, racial equality, and redistrobution of land.

Peru lacked power to attack the strong Spanish forces in the interior so San Martín sought aid from Simón Bolívar, who had liberated northern South America, but Bolívar declined. so San Martin gave him all authority instead of his initial idea of shared leadership.This event is important because following it, Peru was no longer a Spanish colony.

With the formal name Republic of Columbia , Gran Columbia was a short lived republic that many South American countries came from.Gran Columbia had a brief but violent existence during the war.This is an important event because Gran Columbia helped other provinces still at war with Spain.
