  • Louis was born

    Louis XIV was born in Saint Germain en Laye.
  • Louis XIV became king of France

    Louis becomes king of France on May 14, 1643
  • Peace of Westphalia (or of Münster where France had presided,

    while Sweden had presided at Osnabrück) between France and the Austrian Habsburgs France obtains sovereignty over bishoprics of Metz, Toul and Verdun and gains the City of Breisach and the Landgravates of Upper and Lower Alsace.
  • Louis' marriage

    Louis XIV and Marie-Thérèse (the daughter of King Philip IV-Spain) marries. This marriage led the peace between France and Spain.
  • Charles II sells Dunkirk (which Cromwell had won from Spain with French help) to Louis XIV for five million francs.

    Institution of hospital services throughout France. Boulonnais peasant revolt.
  • French Guinea Company. Treaties:

  • Expansion of France's territory

    Louis was able to increase France's land by defeating Spain, the Holy Roman Empire and the Netherlands. Also, Louis had the greatest power in Europe.

  • Objection of Protestant

    Before, the Protestants had rights to worship, but Louis readicated Portestantism by force. The result of this was tragic; soldiers committed murder and torture, many Protestants were executed, 300,000 people left the country and it had effects on French economy.
  • War of the Grand Alliance

    France had war against English, the Holy Roman Empire and the Dutch. The war lasted for nine years. France gave up Lorraine, Catalonia, some parts of Flanders, and Orange. France was still the most powerful nation in Europe.
  • War of the Spanish Succession ended.

    The Treaty of Utrecht was signed. This treated prevented the unity of Spain and France.
  • The death of Louis XIV

    Louis began to suffer from bacteria infection in his leg and at the end he died of coma.
