    When President Madison took office Britan was angering the Americans. Britan had armed Native Americans in the west. Britan had also continued to impress American soldiers. Most Americans belived that the countries honor was at stake.

    In 1810 Henry Clay of kentuckey and John C. Calhoun of South Carolina two War Hawks became house leaders. Clay and Calhoun wanted despritly to go to war with Britan. While many New Englanders belived that this would hurt thier trade and opposed to the war.

    Britain didn't help thier case any when they said that they would continue impressing American sailors. While in the Northwest Native Americans began new attacks. Finally congress declared war with Britain.

    When the war began the Americans where confident that they would win but as the war slowly drug on it was not so easily thought of. Jeffersons military cuts had weakened the military. The army had less than 7,000 men, while the navy only had 16 ships ready for battle.

    In the begining of the war Britan blockaded the American ports. By 1814 Britan had 135 ships blocading American ports. After reinforcing their troops Britan had managed to block all American ports.

    On July 12, 1814 General William Hull led the invasion of Canada from Detroit, Michigan. Hull retreted beliving that there where not enugh soldiers. General Isaac Brock British commander took advantage of Hulls retreat. Brock quickly forced Hull and his men to surrender.

    This victory was won at sea. The USS Constitution defeated the British war ship Guerriere in fierce battle. In tradition American soldiers nicknamed the ship "Old Ironsides" because when British artillery fire bounced off the woden hull, and made the ship seem as if it was made of iron.

    In the Western part of Put-In-Bay this three hour battle took place. With Oliver Hazard Perrys (commander) flagship became badley damaged Perry had to switch ships and fought untill the battle was won. After the war was won Perry said "We have met the enemy and they are ours."

    In this battle Creek warriors attacked several Southern American settlements. As these attacks where taking place Andrew Jackson took command of forces in Georgia. Jackson defeted the Creek warriors and was considered a hero.

    As British forces marched into Washington D.C Dolly Madison (the presidents wife) fled the whitehouse. As Madison fled she grabbed the presidents important papers. The British ended up setting fire to several government buildings including the whitehouse.

    At Fort McHenry, Baltimore Francis Scott Key watched as the American flag raised. Key wrote on the back of an old envolope a pome in which he called the "Star Spangled Banner". Keys pome became popular and was made into a song. In 1931 congress made keys "Star Spangled Banner" into the national anthem.

    On December 15 in Hartford, Conneticut the Federal Delegates discussed sierous matters. Some Delegates belived that New England States should scede from the United States. As the delegates discussed matters word of the war ending treaty reached the convention and ended it.

    This war ending treaty was signed in Ghent Belgum. The treaty was signed on Christmas Eve. After the news of the treaty things became the same as before.

    The news of the treaty took time to reach the United States and the war continued untill the news came about. General Andrew Jackson was still in battle. Jackson ended up winning with his army over the British.
