  • President Madison takes office.

    James Madison became president March 1, 1809, James helped write the constitution, he also helped pass the bill of rights. Madison tried to keep the United States out of war, as much as possible. He was a quiet and scholary man. When Madison took office tension was high with Great Britian.
  • War Hawks Take Power.

    President James Madison didn't want the United Sates, to go into war. Many merchants wanted to restore trade with the British. Members of congress from the south and west called for war with Britian. War Hawks had a strong sense of nationalism.
  • Relations With Britain Worsen

    The British were encouraging the Native Americans to attack the british. The British were supplying them with guns. Both the Americans and British disagreed over trade. Settller from the west and south that were sent out to fight the British we called the War Hawks.
  • Congress Declares War On Britain

    The Native Americans start new attacks on the frontier settlements. The wars kept coming at very bad times for Britain. There was also a small battle between the Americans and the British. The Americans won that battle. The war quickly came, cannons and guns were being fired freely.
  • America is Not Ready For War.

    The Americans had a rough time durning this month. They were locked in a bitter struggle with Napoleon. America could not spare troops to fight. Jefferson wanted a small federal government.
  • Britain Blockades American Ports

    This happened on July 1, 1812. The British Blockade hurt the New England sea trade. The British feared that the United States would win land. The South and West became more influential.
  • Invasion of Canada.

    General William Hull moved American troops into Canada. The Canadians had very few untrained troops to ward off the invasion. This battle was led by a clever British leader, General Isaac Brovck. Brock made his troops wear a red coat to make it appear that expirenced British troops were helping. He also let a message with false info get to the Americans. The message exaggerated the number of Indians fighting with the Canadians. The other attemps to invade Cananda failed.The Americans retreated.
  • Battle of Thames.

    This battle happened on October 5, 1814. The Americans won the battle. Tecumseh died fighting in this war/battle. Without Tecumseh's leadership the Indian Confederation soon fell apart.
  • Battle of Lake Erie.

    The Americans wanted control over Lake Erie. Captain Oliver Hazard built his own ships, he sailed his tiny fleet against the British. The British battled Oliver's ship and left it helpless. One of the americans ships were attacked so Perry rowed to another American ship and kept fighting. The Americans won this battle.

    Andrew Jackson, a Tennesse officer took command of the American troops. Andrew Jackson won a crusing victory in 1814, with help of the Chenokees.The leader of Creeks walked to Jacksons camp, alone, to surrender.
  • USS Constitution Scores a Victory.

    The USS Constitution scored a victory on August 19. 1814. A major sea battle was fought. The USS Constitution defeated the British Warship.
  • Washington D.C. Attacked and Burned.

    This happened in the summer of 1814. The British ships landed into Chespeake Bay and landed by Washington D.C. The British also burnt down the white house and many other important buildings,
  • Attack on Baltimore

    This battle happened on September 12, 1814. The British wanted to attack Washington D.C. On August 1814 the British force walked into Baltimore. The British set fire to many government buildings, one being the White House. The American army tried their best to defent Washington, but they failed.
  • Writing of the Star Spangled Banner.

    It was on the back of an old envelope. Originally a poem. It told the story of his nights watch. When it became popular it set to be a song. In 1931 it was made into the national anthem of the United States.
  • Hartford Convention

    The Hartford Convention happened on December 15, 1814. They were mostly fedralists. They also disliked the Republican president.
  • Treaty of Ghent

    The Treaty of Ghent was signed in Ghent, Belgium. The Treaty was signed on the date od December 24, 1814. The British and Americans agreed to restore the prewar conditions. Other issues were settled later on in the year.
  • Battle of New Orleans.

    Andrew Jackson was a leader in this battle, the Americans set up camp. Jacksons force included many frontiers men. The American soldiers dug trenches for protection. Only seven Americans died. American won.
