  • President Madison takes office

    Madison took office when there was growing tension between America and Britain. It was a bad time to take office.They were also angry because Britain had been supplying Native Americans with firearms.
  • War Hawks take power

    Two Powerfull men in the house of Representatives were War Hawks. Henry Clay and John Calhoun were both War Hawks, which means they were eager to war with Britain.
  • Relations with Great Britain worsen

    During the Early Months of 1812, the relations with Britain worsened. In the spring, Britain told them that they would continue impressing sailors.
  • Congress declares war on Britain

    It was not a goodtime for the Americans to declare war on Britain because they were still at war with the rest of Europe. They did not have time to war with th US.It was bad timing.
  • America is not ready for war

    the army was small, it only had 7,000 men. In the first days the British set up a blockade blocking American Ports. The Navy only had 16 Warships ready for battle.

    The USS Constitution defeated the British Gueriere in battle. The crew called the Constitution "Old Ironsides" because of the two foot thick oak on its sides. The cannonballs harmlessly bounced of its sides.

    In the Battle of Lake Erie American commander Oliver Hazard Perry switched from his badly damaged to another ship and kept fighting untill he won.He prounced his victory by saying "We have met the enemy and they are now ours. They then controlled the lake.

    The Americans followed the British to the river Thames. They beat them there and won. In that battle the Popular Native American Tecumsah died.
  • Battle of Horshoe Bend

    In the summer of 1813 the Native Americans faced a big defeat. A few Creek warriors had been attacking southernors. Andrew Jackson sent soldiers down and beat them.
  • Washington,D.c attacked and burned

    A British force walked into Washington D.C and set fire to several important buildings. The White House was one. Americans were shocked to find out that American forces could not defend there own capital.

    The British moved on to Baltimore where they Bombarded American ships throughout the night. A young american had watched the attack. The Americans had fought off the attack.
  • The Star Spangled Banner.

    During the night that Baltimore was attacked, a young American watched. His name was Francis Scott Key. H wrote a small oem on the back of an old lenvelope. It latter became the Star Spangled Banner.
  • Hartford Convention

    A group of Fedearlists met in Hartford, Connecticut. Some delegates suggested that the New England states withdraw forom the United States of America. But when the news of the treaty came, the plan dissolved.
  • Treaty of Ghent

    Peace talks began in Ghent, Belgium. On Christmas eve, both sides signed a treaty. It took more than a week for the americans to hear about the treaty.
  • Battle of New Orleans
