    During this time, Britain began to arm Native American's in the Northwest. Britain continued to impress American ships. In June of 1809, congress declared war on Britain. John C, Calhoun and Henry Clay became leaders of the House Of Representatives later on. Soon, war was declared on Britain.

    Henry Cay, John C. Calhoun, and their supporters were called War Hawks. War Hawks were people who are eager for war with Britain.Opposition to the war was stronge in New England. New Englanders thought war would harm American trade. In Spring 1812 Britain said they would continue impressing American ships.

    During Spring 1812, Britain told the U.S that they would continue impressing sailors. The Native's in the Northwest began attacking the frontier settlements. In June, congress declared war on Britain. At the time, Britain was still at war in Europe. In August of 1812, the American's won the war.

    The spending on defense in America was reduced. The American navy had only 16 ships. America's navy was small and ill equipped. The government relied on people to volunteer to fight the war. American soldiers were poorly trained.

    Blockading is the shutting of a port or road to prevent things from coming in and out of it. Britain was able to shut down all of the ports when the war ended. At the beginning of the war, a sea battle occured. On August 1812, the US defeated the British war ship. American's nicknamed their ship the "Old Ironsides."

    American troops under General William Hull invaded Canada from Detroit. Hull feared he didn't have enough soldiers. British and Natives forced Hull's army to surrender. The British captured more than 2,000 American's. Soon, another battle took place on Lake Erie.

    Isaac Hull sailed as captain on the American ship.The American ship was called the Constituition.The British ship was called the Guerrie're. For about an hour before the battle the two ships jockeyed for position. After the smoke cleared of the battle, the Constitution won the victory.

    The U.S and Britain both had contol over Lake Erie. In the Western part of Lake Erie, a battle took place. The American flag was badly damaged. America's commander was Oliver Hazard Perry. American's soon won the victory.

    American's followed British into Canada. The American commander was General William Henry Harrison.The Native chief joined forces with the British. Tecumseh, the Native chief was killed in the battle. The American's took home the victory.

    British and French navy's began to seize American ships.The cost of this war was very great.The British would supply Native American's. Britain told the U.S that they would continue to impress American ships. Britain then set up blockades on the American coast.

    The British had a new strategy, it was to attack the Nations Capitol, Washington D.C. The British set fire to several government buildings, including the White House. America's army couldn't defend Washington.The Presidents wife gathered important papers and fled. America lost the vitory.

    The British had planned to attack Fort McHenry. On September 13th the battle took place. The American's beat off the attack. Afterwards, the Star Spangled Banner was written about the attack by an eye witness. In 1931, the Star Spangled Banner was made into the US National Anthem.

    The Star Spangled Banner was written by Francis Scott Key. The Star Spangled Banner was written during the attack on Baltimore. It was originally a poem. It got very popular, so it was set to music and was turned into a song. In 1912, Congress made it into the U.S National Anthem.

    The people of New England feared American's would win land in Florida and Canada. If new states were carved in Florida and Canada, then the South and West would be more influential than the British. Delegates met in Hartfort, Connecticut. The Delegates didn't like the President or the war. The Delegates threatened to leave the union if the war didn't come to a stop.

    In 1814, Britain and Ghent began talking about making peace. On Christmas Eve, 1814, Britain and Ghent signed a treaty, After this treaty was signed, the war ended. Everything returned to the way it had been before the war. After several weeks, American received the treaty and won the victory.

    Andrew Jackson led the American's. More than 2,000 British
    soldiers fell dead during this battle. Only 7 American sharpshooters died. American soldiers dug trenches to defend themselves. America took the victory.
