Cortes enters Tenochtitlan, the Aztec empire. On his way to the empire, he met members of the Tlaxcaca tribe, who were not fond of the Aztecs. 1,000 members of the tribe approached Tenochtitlan with Cortes. Cortes was then welcomed, but soon captured Moctezuma, the leader of the Aztecs.

In early June, Cortes got wind that a Spanish force from Cuba, led by Narvaez, wished to take control of Tenochtitlan. Cortes split his troops, taking some with him to meet the Spanish, and leaving the rest in Tenochtitlan. He left Pedro de Alvarado in Tenochtitlan, and while Cortes was gone, he killed many of the Aztecs.
