    War with the Tepaneca. Up to this point the Tepaneca had been dominant in central Mexico, ruling from Azcapotzalco and taking tribute from the Aztec.

    Cortes is promoted in Cuba

    Diego Valasquez became the governor of Cuba. He made Cortes one of his top officials.

    Hernan Cortes is sent to Mexico

    Diego Valasquez named Cortes the captain of an expedition to Mexico. After a fight, though, he revoked Cortes' status.

    Cortes went against Valasquez's wishes and sailed on to Mexico against orders.

    Cortes took over Veracruz

    Cortes sailed into Veracruz and took it by force. He tried to meet with Montezuma, the Aztec king, but Montezuma refused.

    Cortes sinks his ships

    Cortes sinks his ships and sends one back that had gold on it. Since there was no easy way to get back to Spain, his troops would have to make the best of it under Cortez's orders. It took away any motivates to rebel or mutiny.

    Cortes took Moctezuma hostage

    The Aztec people tried to appease Cortes by giving him gold and other treasures. Cortes didn't trust the people, though, and he took Montezuma hostage.

    Alliances are made

    Cortes allies with Tlaxcala, enemies of the Aztec, assault on the empire begins.The Spanish forces were driven back. The Spanish and their native allies suffered heavy losses.

    Cortes is accused of poisoning his enemies

    The king of Spain sent other rulers to New Spain to aid Cortes. When they became sick, others accused Cortes of poisoning them.

    Cortes had to return to Spain to prove his innocence to the King.

    Cortes returned to Mexico

    Cortes was freed from the charges and returned to Mexico, although the king had demoted him from governor.
  • Dec 2, 1547

    Hernan cortes dies

    In 1541 Cortés returned to Spain and retired to an estate near Seville where he died on 2 December 1547.
