Irene was sent by her Order to live and work among the people of Huasahuasi - a poor mountain village in Peru. She provided homework facilities for the people and a library where she taught children to read and write.

Irene arrived in Peru and taught sewing and craftwork to the women of the village and helped the children.

After 30 years of teaching in Australian schools Irene made her decision that she wanted to serve the poor. She arrived in Peru in 1987 for missionary work.

Irene McCormack returned to the village of Huasahuasi after feeling that the church could not abandon the villagers.

She Died in Peru trying to feed the poor.
