Before Exploration I am Thomas from Jacques Cartier's exploration. We are about to leave on our expidition to find gold, treasure, spices, and a shipping route accross North America to East Asia. Our country, France, financed us with two carracks. Carracks are ships that are 70 feet long, 60 tons and have three masts. It is made of wood, and cloth for the masts. These ships are good for explorations because they are large to hold many men and survive rough seas.

We wear hats and coats made out of animal skins and we also wear armor. Some technology on our ship are astrolabes (positioning device), charts, compasses, cross-staff (to find latitude), traverse boards (a device to tell how far you've gone), and almanacs. All the other men on the ship have different jobs. I was just alerted of a storm so I cant write anymore.

The Wall Today we built a wall around the village to protect us from enemy tribes. It is summer now and it is raining. In the winter it rains cold, white, fluffy powder. It is very windy in the fall. We have to make the wall strong so it doen't fall down. We built the wall because our scouts saw an enemy war party yesterday.

Landfall We have spotted land! As we get closer, we spot an indian wearing deer skin clothing and moccasins. He sees us and runs into the woods. We get off our ship and follow him. When we get to their village, they offer us delicious foods and pelts, so we give them some of our knives.

The Big Ship Today, I was walking along the edge of the woods looking for fish when I spotted two large ships. I ran to tell Chief Donnacona and then we prepared gifts for these strange men. When they got to our village, we let them in and gave them our finnest food and pelts in exchange for metal knives.

The Indian Village These indians treat us very kindly and they teach us how to make many arts and crafts. They feed our men great meals with some strange foods we've never seen. We plan to stay in the village through the winter months. It is starting to get colder and some of our men have gotten a disease called scurvy.

The Strange Men We take the strange men into our village and we treat them very kindly. The other villagers feed them and teach them about our arts and crafts. In exchange, they teach us how to make things out of metal like jewelery and coins. They say that they want to stay through the winter. Some of their men are getting sick and we try our hardest to heal them.

Departure We are leaving the indian village this afternoon. In the end, 25 of our men died of scurvy. I am very sad because we never actually found what we were searching for. We plan on having another exploration to try again.

Foreigners Leaving Today, the white men plan on leaving and going back to the land they call France. Some of our people are getting sick and we think that it is from the explorers. We plan on using the skills that the French men have taught us to advance our village.
