Eli Whitney started making replacement pieces of exact specifications, or nparts that are exactly alike. Production became faster, repairs easier & cheaper; This decreased need for skilled labor. -
National Roads
Albert Gallatin made a road built from Maryland to Virginia. This allowed people to travel around the country easier and helped with settlement of new areas. -
Steam boats
Robert Fulton created boats that were powered by steam engines not water wheels. This transportation became easier & faster. Many cities developed like St. Louis because of this and westward expansion. -
Erie Canal
Calhoun made the Erie Canal which is a waterway that linked New York city with Buffalo. Opened up Ohio for transportation of farm products & development and made Westward expansion easier. -
Lowell Mills
Francis Cabot Lowell made the Lowell Mills where girls came to work 12 hour shifts & live in boarding homes.
Impact: Increased job opportunities for young, unmarried women; gave chance for education; put some workers in danger. -
Steel Plow
John Deere made a light plow with a sturdy steel blade designed for heavy soils. Plowing farms became faster & easier; This increased farming production and expansion of farms into the midwest U.S. -
Telegraph
Samuel Morse made the telegraph: a machine used to communicate by tapping out codes that could be translated and given to the person they were for. This greatly improved communication by making it fasterand connected regions of the country together. -
Sewing Machine & The Spinning Jenny
Elias Howe/James Hargreaves created sewingn machines which allowed people to weave clothe and sew clothing quicker.Increased clothing industry production and increased the need for cotton. -
Transcontinental Railroad
The Central Pacific Railroad and Union Pacific Railroad made a railroad that connected the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. This improved transportation because goods and people would be connected as they moved west.
