    Before MTV was around, artists rarely made music videos, as it was rare for artists to make it on TV. This is due to endless touring and the difficulties faced in finding a recording studio.

    The first video that was aired on it was Video Killed the Radio Star - The Buggles, and initially, the television channel was only available to houses in New Jersey, before expanding to the rest of the US and many other countries.

    It started off using music videos that were provided to them for free by record labels, which made producers aware of the promotional value MTV held, and more interesting music videos began to be made. Some directors, including Spike Jonze, started off on music videos, before moving onto films. MTV was a key instrument in promoting names we all know today: Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince and Duran Duran, whose videos were played on a heavy rotation.

    MTV started airing non-video related programs at teenagers and young adults - some famous examples including My Super Sweet 16, The Osbournes and The Hills. MTV then went on to develop a reputation for pushing cultural boundaries - an example of this being the airing of Madonna's Like a Prayer video

    YouTube was originally founded by former PayPal employees Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim. A year before the official launch, they came up with the idea at a dinner party in San Francisco.

    The name, however, wasn't that well known until Chad Hurley registered the trademark, domain and name on Valentines Day 2005. The first video that was uploaded was 19 seconds long, called "Me at the Zoo" and featured the co-founder Jawed Karim at San Diego zoo.
