  • 510 BCE

    Democracy in Athens

    After the tyrant Solon came to power, he made many changes and reforms to the political system. He repealed many of Draco's laws and outlawed the enslaving of citizens to pay debts. After Solon's rule, Athens was run by a Direct Democracy. Only native-born men had voting power and 500 citizens were chosen randomly every year to be part of a special council. This is significant because it paved the way to the modern Representative democracy we have today.

    The Persian Wars

    After Athens helped one of their colonies attempt to rebel from the Persian empire, the Persian wanted to crush and take over Athens. This lead to a very brutal and long war. Many other Greek city-states including Sparta assisted Athens in this war. The Greeks banded together and won many battle to ultimately win the war. . The wars are significant because they allowed Athens to form the Delian league and boost into the Golden age of Athens.

    Golden Age of Athens

    As a result of winning the Persian wars, Athens founded an alliance called the Delian league. This alliance had city-states pay Athens or send troops to Athens to pay for protection by the rest of the league. This income of money and troops, caused Athens to have an economic and cultural boom. This gave way to arts such as Literature, Theatre, and Classical sculptures which became highly valued. This is significant because Athenians valued a very different art style than Hellenistic culture.

    Alexander The Great's Rule

    After his Father Phillip the II was killed at a wedding, Alexander the Great took the Macedonian throne and all the Greek territory his Father took and used it for his epic conquests. Alexander had been tutored by Aristotle and had been on many military campaigns with his Father. Alexander ended up conquering Greece, the Persian empire, Egypt, and India. Alexander unfortunately died of malaria at age 33. This is significant because it was the only time anyone conquered the Persian empire.
