The Greatest Mistake

  • Snape assigns Hermione as Draco's Potions tutor [referenced]

    Despite his earlier grasp of the subject, Draco Malfoy barely passed Potions his fifth year. Knowing that Snape will be leaving his post as Potions professor, Snape, McGonagall and Dumbledore have concerns about Draco's academic future. Dumbledore suggests that the best student in their class be asked to tutor him. This student is Hermione Granger, who agrees after Slughorn promises extra credit.
  • Draco sleeps with Daphne Greengrass [referenced]

    Draco skips his tutoring session with Hermione to have 'mediocre sex' with Daphne Greengrass. Pansy Parkinson finds out and confronts him, and is joined by a 'flock' of Slytherin girls who are very attracted to him, some of whom are arguably obsessed with him. Hermione spends the entire evening in the library, studying and waiting for Draco to show up.
  • Draco and Hermione's first kiss [flashback, chapter 7]

    Draco fails to avoid telling Hermione about the previous night. They subsequently argue about whether Hermione knows how to snog, and end up snogging passionately for roughly two and a half hours, agreeing to meet up the following evening with the intent of having sex.

    Instead of their typical study session, Draco and Hermione meet up in the Room of Requirement, planning to have sex. Draco is surprised again by her lack of fear of his Dark Mark, but thoroughly overimpressed by her performance, which he, somewhat sarcastically, complains about.
  • Draco is late to tutoring again [flashback, chapter 27]

    Draco comes to the library nearly two hours late, and Hermione is extremely displeased. When he tries to suggest they sleep together again she abandons him in the library.
  • Hermione injures Draco during argument [flashback, chapter 10]

    Draco, having heard a rumour that Hermione slept with Cormac, and she becomes defensive, saying that since they are not really together, monogamy is not applicable. He grabs her arm to stop her from leaving, and she uses a cutting curse to get him to let go, and continues to tell him that he is overreacting, but ultimately treats the wound and breaks down crying about how they "were never supposed to care." He solicits an agreement from her nonetheless to not sleep with other people.
  • Draco takes Hermione to Malfoy Manor [flashbacks, chapters 16,17,18]

    Hermione, who is at the Burrow on holiday, receives a letter from Draco saying that he has planned a Christmas Eve celebration for the two of them. She tells Remus that she needs to go see her parents and he takes her to the Leaky Cauldron. Draco Disapparates them to Malfoy Manor, which is vacant over the holiday. They spend a romantic evening together, but he later wipes the event from her memory, later revealing to Luna that he had told her he loved her.
  • Draco injured by Sectumsempra [referenced]

    Harry follows Draco into the bathroom and observes Draco breaking down emotionally. They get into a fight and Harry uses the 'Sectumsempra' cutting curse, a curse which severely wounds Draco, landing him in the hospital wing.
  • First night sleeping in the same bed/in hospital wing [flashbacks, chapters 12,13,14]

    When offered his Potions, Draco refuses them on the grounds that he does not trust that they are safe for him. Dumbledore gets him to say that he would trust Snape or Hermione to make them. Snape refuses, so McGonagall asks Hermione, who returns to her common room, prepares the potion, and goes to visit Draco. They argue, have sex, and he takes the potion before they fall asleep. When he wakes up, he realises that it was the first time that they slept in the same bed overnight.
  • Hermione teaches Draco to use the tube [referenced]

    The Muggle restaurant connected to the Leaky Cauldon is under construction, making it unsafe for wizards and witches to use it for transportation. Draco and Hermione meet up at a tube station, where she instructs him on how to travel via the subway in order to come visit her at her Muggle home.
  • Hermione tortured by Death Eaters [referenced]

    Hermione, Ron, Ginny, Neville, and Luna meet up to discuss the upcoming mission, but are cornered by Death Eaters around dawn. Hermione offers to be tortured by an additional Death Eater in exchange for every one of the others they free. Bellatrix has duties elsewhere, and out of vengeance she agrees, releasing the others and later leaving Hermione with Greyback and Draco. Draco does torture her along with Greyback, keeping up appearances. Hermione ultimately escapes, but is not pursued.
  • Draco and Hermione meet in Muggle hotel [flashback, chapter 11]

    Draco and Hermione had exchanged letters earlier, agreeing to meet up in a Muggle hotel on the 16th. Reticent, Draco shows up, but tries to articulate that it feels wrong to have sex with her after torturing her. She pleads for him to push his conscience aside and mindlessly sleep with her, and he obliges, leaving immediately after.

  • Draco visits Hermione in Muggle London [chapter 1]

    Although they had not previously discussed seeing each other again, Draco decides that he wants to ask Hermione a few questions. Knowing she plans to leave for the Burrow on the 10th, he Apparates to her house in London. She answers his enquiries and they have 'one last hurrah.'
  • Daily Prophet article with kiss [chapter 2]

    Draco and Hermione share an intense kiss before he leaves her house for good. Unfortunately, they get caught, and later that day the Daily Prophet prints an article saying that they were romantically together, a claim they both deny, professing that their relations were merely sexual.
  • Granger family vacates home [chapter 2,3]

    Knowing that the Death Eaters might believe her parents may have information about her or Harry's whereabouts, she wipes and replaces their memories. They move to Australia as Wendell and Monica Wilkins and no longer know they have a daughter. Hermione Disapparates over to the Burrow from behind the Leaky Cauldron.
  • Draco's interview [referenced]

    In a press conference arranged by his mother, Draco is interviewed by Rita Skeeter on the topic of his and Hermione's relationship. He conveys that her magical and academic capabilities are even more impressive than the Wizarding World currently is aware.
  • Blaise visits Draco for explanation [chapter 5]

    Feeling that his best mate owes him an explanation, Blaise Zabini goes to the Malfoy Manor after the Malfoy family returns from Draco's press conference. He believes that Draco is feeling more than he is letting on, and doesn't want to settle for letting his best mate wallow in his stifled emotions.
  • Harry moved from Privet Drive [chapter 6]

    Harry is taken from Privet Drive by the majority of the Order of the Phoenix, and delivered to Shell Cottage, one of the safehouses. Mad-Eye and Hedwig die during ambush. Hermione, Ginny, and Luna were in an emotional conversation, and their elders decided not to take Hermione and Luna, although they were originally in the line-up. Ron informs Hermione that Draco was among the Death Eaters who attacked them, and Hermione becomes angry at him and then retreats to her room, crying.
  • Hermione's interview [chapter 6]

    Hermione is interviewed by Rita Skeeter about the relationship, and insists that they are not interested in each other and that he is not a threat to her. The (extended) Malfoy family attends, along with a great number of friends and family supporting Hermione. Hermione wears a scandalous dress of Fleur's, which Rita comments on at the close of the interview.
  • Trio escapes attack of Bill and Fleur's wedding [chapter 8,9]

    The Death Eaters have staged a takeover of the Ministry on the same night that Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour get married at the Burrow. Hermione is first to be discussed in the Death Eater meeting - the first time since the reveal that she is specifically mentioned - and Draco is taunted with it. The Death Eaters successfully conduct their Ministry takeover and head to the Burrow, but Hermione Disapparates the Trio away to Muggle London.
  • Trio/Hermione attacked in Muggle London [chapter 9]

    The Trio is attacked by a pair of Death Eaters in a cafe in Muggle London. They Stun and Obliviate them and leave for Grimmauld Place. Hermione realises she is without her bag and returns to get it, unaware that there has been a team of Death Eaters sent after her, and is confronted by six more. Lucius Malfoy is the only Death Eater whom she does not kill before Disapparating away.
  • Luna captured by Death Eaters [chapter 11]

    Luna is captured by Death Eaters on her way home from school, and brought to Malfoy Manor, where Draco is enlisted to determine whether she is worth torturing. He professes that she is legitimately crazy, a claim which her words and actions seemingly confirm, as she continuously blames nargles for stealing Bellatrix' things and making other similar statements.
  • Draco and Luna first have tea [referenced]

    Luna has earned Draco's respect after her capture. Late Christmas Eve night, he sneaks down into the cellar and brings Christmas cookies and a pot of tea to share with her. They retreat to a different area of the cellar from where Ollivander and Griphook tend to sleep and have a small celebration of the holiday. This is when they really begin to become friends.
  • Draco begins to admit deeper feelings for Hermione [chapter 12]

    Blaise visits Draco to advise him against destroying himself, and Draco equates self-destruction with getting "over Hermione."
  • Trio taken to Malfoy Manor [chapter 12,13]

    The Trio is captured by Snatchers shortly after Hermione deduces that Luna has been captured. They are taken to Malfoy Manor, and Draco is called upon to determine whether Harry is the real Harry. He eventually says that Harry and Ron are not themselves, but does not protect Hermione, knowing that they would expect him to. Harry and Ron are taken back to the Forest of Dean and Hermione is kept as a prisoner.

    Feeling as though he may be unable to handle being in the same house as Hermione, Draco follows up on a suggestion from a friend to pay another woman for sex. He does not enjoy himself, however, and returns home disappointed and more anxious about his feelings than before.

    Dolohov, having tried earlier to get Hermione to sleep with him, reiterates that the offer stands, and she again refuses, using Draco's presence to insult him and saying that because she has skills as both a witch and a muggleborn she has the advantage. Narcissa is the only person able to hold Hermione, due to the element of surprise.
  • Draco sleeps with Daphne Greengrass [referenced]

    Still trying to fill the gap left by Hermione, Draco responds to a letter from Daphne, inviting her over. He attempts a somewhat romantic night, but makes it clear to Daphne that he does not intend to pursue her. They have sex. Nothing comes of it.
  • Voldemort makes ruling on Hermione [chapter 15]

    Although Hermione has been held captive by the Death Eaters for nearly a month, her torturers have not been able to force her to give up any information, and have been paying the price with their own physical wellbeings. Originally, she was deemed too valuable to kill, but now when the question is raised, Lord Voldemort officiates that if she does not supply them with information by the week's end, they should kill her.
  • Draco ellicits help from Luna [chapter 16]

    In the middle of the night, Draco goes to the cellar to visit with Luna. He asks two favours of her: one, the information being asked of Hermione. He also inquires as to her knowledge of memory spells, regretting a decision he made earlier which resulted in his removing an important event from Hermione's memory.
  • Draco alerts the Order of the Phoenix [referenced]

    At Luna's request, Draco sends a letter of warning to Professors Snape and McGonagall, telling them that various pieces of information have been leaked to the Death Eaters, allowing the Order to prepare for potential attacks.

    Hermione wakes in the middle of the night due to another nightmare featuring Draco's demise. Luna comforts her as she confesses that she believes herself to be going crazy, and tells Hermione that she has fallen in love with Draco.

    The Death Eaters at the Manor make the final decision on how they will try to break Hermione. They decide that raping her is a viable tactic, and Draco volunteers, mouthing off when his motives are questioned.
  • Draco and Hermione officially (re)unite [chapters 19/20]

    Draco's expertise with Hermione becomes an asset when he convinces the other Death Eaters that he would be the person most likely to get Hermione to talk. Although they expect him to rape her, the two discuss their relationship, admit their love for one another, and have sex. They agree to pretend that Draco convinced her to talk. He reports to his aunt then gives her a locket which she later discovers is a Malfoy family heirloom.
  • Attack at Tonks home / Escape from Malfoy Manor [chapters 20/21]

    Draco shares the information that Luna gave him with the other Death Eaters with the pretence that Hermione confessed. They plan and execute a raid on the Tonks home, where many Order members are being harboured. The Order, however, is prepared for their attackers, and the attack fails. Draco lies again to protect Ron and Harry, but is forced to explain his predicament to the Order and to his father. Dobby retrieves Hermione, Luna, and the other prisoners, and takes them to Shell Cottage.
  • Hermione kills Rodolphus Lestrange [chapter 18]

    The larger group of Death Eaters at the Manor makes what is essentially their last-ditch effort to get Hermione to confess. They move her in and out of the cellar all day. Knowing that there is a chance to be alone with Draco, she cooperates rather well, but when she is physically assaulted she fights back with the same vigour as always, resulting in injury for multiple Death Eaters and the death of Rodolphus Lestrange.
  • Hermione, Luna, and Dean deduce purpose of phials [chapter 21]

    Hermione, Luna, and Dean examine the phials they have collectively received from Draco, and conclude that they are mixes of Polyjuice Potion meant for Hermione and Luna to use while robbing the Lestranges' vault.
  • Hermione regains memory of Christmas Eve [chapter 21]

    Around one in the morning, Dean is listening to the radio in the room next to Hermione's. A song that she and Draco had danced to plays and Hermione recognises it. As can happen with ill-executed memory spells, this song sparks Hermione's memory, and she begins to remember her holiday visit to Malfoy Manor the previous year.
  • Draco is taken to the Order for protection [chapter 22; referenced]

    Lucius Malfoy has been unsuccessful in his attempts to convince the Dark Lord that Draco is innocent in regard to the prisoners' escape. He contacts Severus, whom he knows is a double agent, and Severus decides that Draco would be safest under Order protection. He escorts Draco to the headquarters of the French chapter, where they are greeted fairly warmly. Draco discusses his future with McGonagall, and ultimately decides that he will swear permanent allegiance to the Order.
  • Hermione, Luna and Harry Rob Gringotts [chapter 22; referenced]

    Using the Polyjuice Potion Draco provided, clothing provided by Apolline Delacour, and the plan Hermione had devised weeks ago, Hermione and Luna disguise themselves as Bellatrix and Narcissa and go to Bellatrix' Gringotts vault. Harry uses the Invisibility Cloak to sneak in with them and they find Hufflepuff's Cup. They are nearly caught, but Luna convinces the Gringotts dragon to fly them out, who drops them off outside Shell Cottage. They contact the Order and are returned to the Tonks home.
  • Draco is moved to the Tonks house [chapter 22]

    Minerva decides that Draco would be best off being with the others his age, and has him taken from the Paris headquarters to the Tonks home. Andromeda and Tonks receive him, and Tonks quickly alerts Hermione, who rushes to greet him.
  • Narcissa Malfoy rescued [chapter 23]

    Voldemort decides that Narcissa should be tortured in order to determine Draco's whereabouts. Lucius challenges him in his first ever open act of defiance; he is promptly but hastily locked in his study. He calms himself enough to contact Severus, who goes to Bill and then Minerva and begs for the Malfoys' safety. They agree reluctantly, and groups are dispatched to the Manor. Both remaining Malfoys are saved and taken to the Burrow, where the Malfoys and Hermione share a touching moment.
  • Draco confides in Harry [chapter 23]

    Very early in the morning, Draco overhears a distressing converation regarding his family, and Harry questions him. He originally is hesitant to speak, but then decides to talk to Harry.
  • Molly decides to clothe Draco [chapter 24]

    Molly gathers clothing from each of her sons - Harry included - in order to see whose best fit Draco. Ultimately it is found that Ron's fit best, which Draco considers almost ironic.
  • Draco declares his love in front of the Order [chapter 24]

    In an Order morning meeting, Ron is informed that he will be sharing his clothing with Draco, and he refuses. He makes multiple degrading comments about the Malfoy, even though he is opposed by everyone else. Hermione gets fed up with him to the point where she leaves the meeting. Draco tells Ron that he has no reason to disrespect Hermione and that Draco's love doesn't change that. Ron is stunned by Draco's concete proclamation that he loves her.
  • Lucius begins to come to acceptance [chapter 25]

    Lucius begins to eschew derogatory terms, jokes with Hermione, and eventually agrees to swear allegiance to the Order. It is discovered that his patronus is a Hippogriff. He thanks Molly, saying that it would have been worse than Azkaban to go on without Narcissa. Lucius refers to Hermione by her given name and starts treating the others more like equals.

    When Draco produces his corporeal Patronus, it is an otter; especially considering that he did not know that Hermione's was also an otter, this was very telling.

    After the morning meeting, the confused Ron locks himself in his room, only allowing Harry to come in. He eventually lets Luna in, and they talk about his changing opinion of Draco. Having liked him for a few months with no entirely romantic advances whatsoever, Luna decides to make the first move, and kisses him. That kiss leads into almost ten minutes of snogging, after which Luna rushes to tell Hermione, ousting a frustrated Draco just as their snogging was on its way further.
